Netbackup 6.5.4 upgrade to version 7.x

I have recently upgraded a Netbackup Server environment from version 6.5.5 to 7.1. You can directly upgrade the version 6.x to 7.1. What my recommandation is

1.) First you should take the backup of Catalog and also keep the DR file some where on the Network.

2.) Download the 7.1 patch which may be frustrating sometime. I have a post which may decrease your tension in downloading the 7.1 product. See the below link for your reference:

One things which is important in this post

Call Symantec Sales for the notification ID which you put in the https://licensing.symantec.com to download the 7.1 product OR they will give you the serial no which you put in the fileconnect Site to download the product 7.1.

Note:

If you also have DLO for Netbackup installed on the machine on which Netbackup Server is installed (in my case i have DLO installed and i also upgraded win2003 to win2008) and you are also planning to upgrade the OS with the Netbackup ,So you will face problem because win2008 OS will only support DLO 6.1 with MP6. See the below post for your reference.

Thanks for your response. I have been able to download the NBU7.1 files. My challenge now is to map out the downtime for the upgrade.of great concern is the time frame to test my exhange backup and other critical data backup immediately after the cutover to version 7.1. Just wondering if you could share your plans with me.What are the issues (if any) you face or need to create a work around for immediately after the upgrade? How did you care about importing backup images taking afer the restored catalog , to new environment? Because our catalog is about 1.5TB and it will obviously be a big challenge to shut down current environment for such duration of time that will be needed to restore the catalog to new master server NBU7.1 and do the upgrade. so obviously we will potentially be looking at importing some images back to new environment after the upgrade is completed.

Your last post is slightly confusing - your first post sounded like 'straight forward' upgrade, your last post sounds like you want to migrate to new hardware?

If you want to migrate to new hardware you will need a phased approach. You will use hot catalog backup and restore on your current 6.5.4 version to migrate to new hardware. See http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH7744.

Please let us know if you want to upgrade on existing hardware or if migration to new hardware is also involved.

As regards the upgrade, yes it involves also changing from 32bit win2003 to windows 2008. I realised NBU6.5.4 is not supported on windows 2008R2 so we cant use windows2008R2 as new master server in the upgrade plan - do you recon with that?

So i will install a new server(windows2008) with same hostname and ip address as old master and NBU6.5.4 (same level as the old), then perform catalog restore and then upgrade to NBU7.1.

Thus, in my view, we may have to repeat same process(backup catalog) once on NBU7.1 windows2008 and restore to another server windows2008R2 NBU7.1.

Or have you any faster way  to go from win2003 32bit  directly to NBU7.1 windows2008R2 in this senario. Because our ultimate aim is to achieve NBU7.1 on windows 2008R2.

maybe you better first upgrade Netbackup 6.5.4 to 7.1 on your windows 2003 , and then confirm everything is okay after the upgrade , say running for some days , and do the fully backup and restore tests.

then migrate this Netbackup 7.1 to your windows 2008 box .

You will see in the OS compatibility guide (link in my 1st post) that 32-bit Windows master is still supported.

So, Eric is correct - upgrade on existing master, run like this while planning migration to new hardware.

Ok. my plan now is to get another hardware ready for this.the idea is for us to have an easy rollback plan. so the existing windows2003 master server will be shutdown and catalog will be restored on the 1st new hardware(windows2008, NBU6.5.4) and upgrade to NBU7.1.Then the catalog will be backup on this new hardware ,then restored to the 2nd newhardware(windows2008 R2, NBU7.1)

Will this plan be ok?

And one more thing, we will be upgrading our media servers as well to 7.1. Can you share with me the steps to decommission these media server and get the media backedup by those media servers migrated(make restorable by the new servers) to the new media servers as we will be changing the names of the media servers.
