NETBACKUP 7.5 : Unable to Connect to Netbackup host "<hostname>"

Good Day,

I hope someone can help me :)

I am currently trying to backup an ESXi server from NETBACKUP7.5, but with no joy so far

Situation:

I set up the ESXi server myself, therefore I am root on it. I can ping it from the NBU Master Server straight away. The DNS resolution works fine.

On the NBU Admin Console side:

Before creating a new Job policy, I added the ESXi server name in :

Host Properties/Master Server/Properties/VMWare Access Hosts/Add

And also in:

Media and Device Management/Credentials/Virtual Machine Servers

Having done this, I created a new policy:

NetBackup Management/Policies/New Policy

Policy Type tab : Standard

Clients tab : I inserted the ESXi hostname

Backup Selection/New and from there, the following error message appears:

Unable to connect to Netbackup host “<hostname>”

So I am unable to browse into my ESXi server content. And I cannot progress any further and complete the Policy settings.

Can anyone advise please?

Many thanks & regards,

  • You cannot backup the ESXi server itself - just the VMs on it.

This manual is a step-by-step on how to configure VMware backups with VMware policy type.
(You need Enterprise Client license for this feature.)
    NetBackup 7.5.0.x for VMware Administrator's Guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5605

The other option is to install NBU Client in each VM and back them up as normal NBU clients.

  • Marianne,

I found the solution to my problem thanks to the PDF doc you provided.

    1. Add the ESXi server name name in:

    Host Properties/Master Server/Properties/VMWare Access Hosts/Add

    And also in:

    Host Properties/Master Server/Properties/Client Attributes/Add

    And also in:

Media and Device Management/Credentials/Virtual Machine Servers then add ESXi root credentials

    2. In the Job Policy settings, Clients tab : Add the ESXi server name.

    3. Then from the Client name tab, right-click the hostname | Change then select the "Browse and select Virtual Machine"

Then NBU will display all the VMs stored on this ESXi server ^^

My backup is currently running, I'm happy.

    Cheers ^^
