Netbackup 7.6 Antivirus Exclusion

I am trying antivirus (McAfee) exclusion for netbackup 7.6 for Windows client & I am following the below article.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH152328

If I define the exlcusion folder (without defining any processes, default profile) "C:\ProgramFiles\VERITAS\<Netbackup>\online_util\fi_cntl" the performance is good.

But if I have to define the processes and exlcusion folder (Low Risk Profile) it doesn't seems to work. I have added bpbkar32.exe, bpfis.exe under low risk profile processes and the path as "C:\ProgramFiles\VERITAS\Netbackup"

Any advice?

  • I would definite exclude all Netbackup processes from Mcafee both on disk and in-memory scan.

I have seen a Oracle restore going havoc for a day or two until we realized Mcafee was blocking access. i have also seen netbackup disk storage units going up/down completely random because of Mcafee.

Excluding a process from Mcafee does not necessary mean it will make Netbackup run faster, but it assures Netbackup run as intended.

There is also a more in-depth guide for how to exclude MCafee from scanning Netbackup in this tech note

  • Hi,

If the performance is good, then why bother trying to exclude the processes? Also, if its not working, then you need to check that with the AV vendor.

  • Curious to know what ".... it doesn't seems to work" mean? Oh, you are missing a space in 'ProgramFiles'.
  • I have resolved this problem by fine tuning McAfee dfault policy. Now the backup runs much faster. Exclusion of "C:\ProgramFiles\VERITAS\<Netbackup>\online_util\fi_cntl" is must for better performance.
