NetBackup for Oracle in Data guard (log shipping) environments

Has anyone used NetBackup in an envionment where Oracle Data guard (log shipping) is in use ? We are facing issues while performing backups from stand-by/secondary servers....

What are the restrictions for Oracle backups in Data guard environments.

  • Online backup mode using "alter database begin backup" may have such restriction, but I could not find such statement for RMAN in Oracle docs. As per Oracle docs, you can backup DB on physical standby database.

    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e41134/rman.htm

RMAN compatibility on standby database is oracle matter, so you should ask further questions in Oracle forum.

  • Hello Ashokk,

What is the issue your having during the backup of your secondary servers?

  • No restrictions in NetBackup. If Oracle RMAN worksbwith sbt channel, stream-based backup with NetBackup for Oracle must work. It is better to ask in Oracle forum if there are any restriction for RMAN in standby database.

  • From NetBackup also there are some restrictions/constraints. Say for example , for SQL if log shipping is enabled, online backup should be performed from Primary DB only.

Like this , what constraints we have in Oracle data guard environments ?
