  • I agree that software compression is not the best and where possible use hardware compression

But do bear in mind that on both occasions you did back up 209765 files that came to 24954560kb as you backed up the same data - the compression makes the difference in how much it wrote to your device so that is where you will see the space saving

  • Compression ratio will depend upon the type of data you are backing up, some data won't be compressed much if it is already compressed.

Also it is always better to use hardware compression instead of compression in the policy. If you are using NBU encryption or compression then hardware level compression will not happen.

You might need to see your hardware side to get a effective compression. Were you getting the compression before ?Is other data or clients getting compressed?

Try to disable compression and run the backups. If none is getting compressed then it might be an issue at hardware level and you might need to check your hardware vendor.

  • Than you.

I backup the data to disk, no hardware compression.

The truth is the compression does not take effect although I check the 'compression' option.

The compression can take effect only after I restart Netbacup services.

So, I am a littile confused when does it take effect if I change some option of the policy.

  • What kind of disk is this? some kind of storage lun or some kind of raid? MSA?

Is it taking exactly same space on disk, check for size on disk for the data that is getting backed up.

Also it all depends on kind of data.

    Read page 9 about compression.
