Replication vs. Duplication

Hello Forum, I have a quick question regarding NetBackup backup terms and definitions. What are the distinctions, if any, between NetBackup replication and duplication ?

  • In simple words

eg: Duplication - data is transferred between one medium/devices to another medium .

                                 like disk to tape,tape-tape

For AIR- It is site to site replication using SLPs.

replicates one Netbackup Domain to another Netbackup domain.

Please read this excellent article for more details:

  • Good general definition from Riaan.

But then there is Netbackup Replication Director, which has nothing to do with cross Netbackup domain copying of data. Expect some confusion of the two ....

    Replication does  (http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6465)

This guide describes how to use NetBackup Replication Director to send copies of files, applications, and databases to on- or off-site storage by using a single interface for unified policy management, snapshot copy management, snapshot copy monitoring, and global search and restore.
