symantec netbackup ESX basics

Hi ALL,

Please let me know the concept of basic VM ware backup.I have read the manual.

  1. We install NBU on all the virtual machine on the ESX machine. ??
  2. In NBU policy we mention the name of that ESX machine or all the individual client ??

  • Marianne is correct, you have posted the answer to the question you have asked yourself ...

However, perhaps it is not too easy to understand, I will give you a clue ...

On the ESX server, this is where the VM clients live.

The NBU software is ONLY installed on the VMWare backup host

The vmware backup host must be able to access the datastore on the esx server

SO, the ONLY server that NBU connects to  is the VMWare backup host, this is the ONLY machine NBU backups up ... and the ONLY machine with the NBU client software installed.

    BUT

The VMWare backup host has access to the disks containig the VM clients ....

So, can you work out how it works, or even have a guess after reading the guide again ?

    CLUE.  snapshots are involved

  • You have clearly NOT read the manual.

Try again.... Start with Chapter 1: Introduction

This chapter includes the following topics:
    ■ About NetBackup for VMware
    ■ Full virtual machine backup vs file-level backup
    ■ vStorage vs VCB
    ■ Minimum levels for vStorage support
    ■ When VCB is required
    ■ NetBackup for VMware components
    ■ Overview of the VMware backup process
    ■ NetBackup for VMware license requirement
    ■ NetBackup for VMware terminology
  •

NetBackup for VMware uses a special Windows host that is called a VMware backup host
(formerly called the VMware backup proxy server). The backup host is a NetBackup client
that performs backups on behalf of the virtual machines. The backup host must have access
to the datastores of the virtual machines.
The backup host is the only host on which NetBackup client software is installed. No NetBackup
client software is required on the VMware virtual machines.
Note that the backup host is referred to as the recovery host when it performs a restore.
The backup host can be configured in either of the following ways:
    ■ The backup host can be a NetBackup Windows client with a connection to separate master
and media servers. The master servers and media servers can be Windows, UNIX, or Linux.
    ■ Or, the NetBackup Windows client and a Windows master and/or media server can all
reside on the same backup host. In this case, all NetBackup components (servers and client)
    must be Windows.
    Backup host
NetBackup client Installed on the backup host (Windows).

What is difference between Backup host and Netbackup client here?
  • NetBackup client  you must be aware of till now. Backup host is defined in your post itself. NBU and VMware came up with joint approch towards V-ray vision hence NBU uses vStorage API to leverage this benefit. This ensures us to protect Guest that too NBU Agent less or with Agent (except if restore is to performed on original host and/or GRT is to be enabled   in PASS THROUGH mode)

with 7.5 Abdul had confirm that now OS platform has been extended to cover SLES under backup host pre-reqs. So if you have SLES which is also vCenter you can make it backup host

In case you need to offhost backups from LAN to SAN read below

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/nuts-and-bolts-netbackup-vmware-netbackup-5220-and-sles-based-backup-hosts

for assigning those Data Stores to Backup host, we strictly rely on zoning , we do not want those LUNs to be initialized , or mounted

Below are the steps that we need to follow

Run Following syntax from Backup Host . Run CMD with administrative privileges

    ·         Diskpart automount disabled

o    Disabling automount would prevent Windows from automatically mounting any new basic volumes that are added to the system.

    ·         Diskpart automount scrub

o    Scrub would Removes volume mount point directories and registry settings for volumes that are no longer in the system. This prevents volumes that were previously in the system from being automatically mounted and given their former volume mount point(s) when they are added back to the system.

Above syntax must be executed prior to zoning is done. Also make note that above service are by default enabled in Windows 2k8 family, and they are restored back to default state after patch is applied. So we need to disabled them manually

    ·         Disable Virtual Disk Service

o    After zoning is done and LUNs are visible in Disk management as Basic Online with Healthy status , Disable Virtual Disk Service from Services console. This would prevent this LUNs being visible to others accessing Backup host

    Hope above clears your doubts

Also would recommend rather to wait till you get timely revert on assistance from Forum, simulate lab in UAT  and evaluate all the options available. Most of your queries get answered there itself . More over it would be practise for your self too ;-)

  • Figure 1-1 in Chapter 1 is a picture with all the bits and pieces that makes it easier to understand.

The rest of the manual further explains each step:

    Chapter 2: Required tasks: overview

    Chapter 3: Notes and prerequisites

Chapter 4: Configure NetBackup access to VMware

Chapter 5: Configure NetBackup policies for VMware

Chapter 6: Configure automatic selection of virtual machines for backup

    And so on.....

Theory in manual is useless until you actually configure it. Simply follow steps in manual. You will see how the pieces fit together.

Best is to stop asking questions about theory. Configure it in real life.

Ask questions when you experience problems during setup/configuration.

NIHKIL it seems user guides are not your forte. Thats OK, There not mine exactly but are my go-to references. But you know what, the internet is great for understanding, teaching and learning.

Have you heard of Youtube.? I feel we have drummed Google into you enough. Particularly using 'letmegooglethatforyou'.

How about actually watching someone do what you invariably seem to ask questions about.

Use Youtube to seek out tutorials or recorded webcasts on sessions on NetBackup.

Heres the one for NetBackup for VMware - 7.5 (this is even available in 720p HD) (found this in 2 seconds)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c3xWwug604

If this video brings you to question configuration then refer to the user guides.

And guess what down the right hand side are OTHER relevant tutorials! Wowzers!!

    Heres another tip.

Search for maybe powerpoint presentations or attend webcasts that symantec put on for teaching setup and configurations. Seek these out and you should be a Master of your... well NetBackup master... theres hope for all us yet!
