System state backup error

Hi,

System state backup is completing partially in about 9 servers with the following error in job details.

Warning bpbrm (pid=1757) client swift: WRN - can't open file: System State:\Automated System Recovery\BCD\BCD (WIN32 -536832991: Unknown error)

Error bpbrm (pid=1757) from client swift: ERR - Error encountered while attempting to get additional files for System State:\

Details:

Master server OS:  SUN OS 5.10 (Netbackup version: 7.0.1)

Media Server OS : AIX 6.1 (2 media servers) (Netbackup version: 7.0.1)

Error Clients(9 servers) OS : Windows 2008 R2 (Netbackup client version: 7.0 )

We observed that, for all these 9 servers, WMI writer is not stable. (Remaining all VSS writers are stable).

I have read in one of the tech notes that we need to apply hot fix for netbackup 7.0.1 if we face similiar issue.

As per my knowledge, System state backup will be successful only when all VSS writers are stable.

For other servers having same OS and NB version with all VSS writers in stable mode, system state backups are completing successfully.

Only for those 9 servers with WMI writer error, system state backup is not working.

If we apply hot fix without making WMI writer stable in client servers, system state backup will complete successfully?

Please help.

  • VSS writers should not be in error state. This is the 1st thing that needs to be fixed. Sometimes a reboot fixes this. The next thing to be fixed is NBU version. 7.0 is VERY old. Numerous fixes for W2008 System State backups were included in 7.1.0.x patches. Current NBU version is 7.6.1.2. You will need to upgrade master and media server before upgrading client.
  • Hi Bhardwaj

It looks similar please verify below link

    https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH77741.html

    TROUBLESHOOTING:
Run a new backup of shadow copy with Trend micro disabled.
It should fail with the same error.
Connect to the client and run a local backup of system state.
    wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:f:
If this should fail with the following error, proceed with Workaround in the next section:
Backup started at '2009-12-08 14:04:40' failed with following error code '2155348237' (Enumeration of the files failed.). Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.

    WORKAROUND:
    Un-install Trend Micro.
    Run the following:
    wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:f:
    This should succeed.
    Run a backup from NetBackup
Because uninstalling Trend Micro is just a workaround, Symantec recommends coordinating with Trend Micro and apply the required patches.  Also check with MicroSoft for the latest VSS patches.

  • I just searched this forum for the string:    BCD\BCD

...and quite a few 'solved' hits came up, e.g. like this:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/unable-perform-full-backup-master-server-7104

...maybe this or one of the other found topics/posts will help you.

  • Hi srivani,

We are not using Trend micro in our site. Our window engineers found that it's may be due to HP open view in servers.

Any way thanks for sharing knowledge.
