Tape drives are not discovered by Netbackup

Hello All,

We have a problem on NetBackup 6.5.5 on our Windows 2003 Media Server.

On the windows device manager all LTO3 drives are perfectly discovered but NetBackup doen't see them (the scan command doesn't show anything) :

C:\Documents and Settings\admins>"D:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin\scan.exe"

*********************** SDT_CHANGER ************************
*********************** SDT_OPTICAL ************************

I've found some technotes about a similar problem but that doesn't work :

I've tested veritas drivers and the latest IBM drivers (6.2.x)

IBM Tape Diagnostic Tools show drives perfectly :

I haven't any idea how to test to detect the problem...

Do you have any idea or have you already seen this kind of error ?

  • I have honestly never experienced any problems with Symantec drivers on 32-bit Windows servers.

This is what the Device Compatibility Guide says w.r.t. tape drivers:

    4. For 32-bit Windows systems, Symantec tests and recommends the use of the Symantec tape drivers. The latest release of the Symantec Tape Device Driver Installer can be downloaded from the Symantec support site. Symantec does not extensively test with the manufacturers' 32-bit tape drivers, however, they are supported, and Symantec will work with customers and vendors in an attempt to resolve any issues. Symantec and most hardware vendors listed are members of TSANet.
    5. For 64-bit Windows systems, the manufacturer's most recent tape driver should be used. The Symantec tape drivers are not compatible with 64-bit Windows systems.

Also see the following section in the Compatibility Guide w.r.t. IBM Tape Driver:

    IBM Tape Driver Support

The list below is intended to show the latest versions of the IBM device drivers that have been tested with NetBackup. Older versions may work but using the versions listed here is recommended.

If using the IBM Windows Tape Device Drivers be sure to choose the install_nonexclusive.exe executable. This option permits a tape drive to be accessed by multiple processes on a Media Server, which is a requirement for NetBackup.

NetBackup requires the IBM Data Path Failover feature to be disabled on the IBM tape device driver. To disable this feature, open the reg folder of the IBM driver package, double-click DisableDPF.reg, and reboot the system.

    - IBMTape driver level 6.1.9.5 tested on Windows

Note: The "ULTRIUM-TD" and the "ULT3580-TD" inquiry strings are interchangeable (both are supported), unless otherwise indicated. The "ULTRIUM-HH" and the "ULT3580-HH" inquiry strings are interchangeable (both are supported), unless otherwise indicated.
