Tape usage

Suspend options available on the Vault profile Eject tab are as follows:

On the Eject tab we have checked(selected) the following. 
Suspend this session's media --> At time of eject
Eject mode: --> Defered eject.

Anther thing we had 23 LTO5 tapes this week, for 2 weeks. Normally under our old setup (NetBackup 5.6) we had about 8 LTO3 tapes a week.

How can we tell how mush data is on each tape?

We have about 6 different vault jobs.

Use 'Tape List' report or 'bpmedialist' from cmd to see how much data is on each tape.

To understand why a lot of tapes are used, please post a screenshot of 'Choose Backups' and 'Duplication' tabs. This might point us in the right direction. (We may ask more questions depending on what we see in screenshots!)

Reduce the number of drives available for Vault - the dups will take longer, but the tapes will be 'more' full.

We have about 17 different vault jobs. All of the jobs have 4 drives available to them. We are looking at the jobs in the activity monitor and if the job took less then 2 hours we are changing the available drives to 2. Perhaps we can also combine some of the Vault  

One of the Vault jobs took 20hrs so we will leave that one. Many of the jobs fell off the activity monitor. We will not know how this affects the jobs until the next vault in 2 weeks.

I have to get permission from security to post these pics. There is not much to see there if you just ask me to tell you whats there I can.

If all vaults share the same library then that is your issue if they are doing ejects as you loose tapes every time a vault job runs.

Perhaps it would be better to let the vaults do the duplications and then have a final vault that runs much later that does all of your ejects / suspensions

Reducing the number of drives will not make much diffrence as you are loosing the tapes as a result of each vault job

We to vault duplication though out the week and then run a vault eject once every 2 weeks. We have only one tap libary.

How many volume pools do your vault profiles use (again causes more tapes to be used)

If you run a client backups report for all clients for a week - export it as a text file you should be able to open it with excel (show all files) and once brought in sum up column F to see how much data you now back up in a week - divide it by 1024 three times to get a TB figure

Finally has anything else changed - client side encryption etc. that causes the tape to hold native capacity

We only use one

15314.463 GB I got this figure by useing OpsCenter. Under Reports --> Deduplication --> Pre vs. Post Deduplication Size. I set filter for the last week. I basicly just added up the pre dulication colum.

No changes this is a band new build. The EMM was imported from the old setup. the server has been running for about 4 months.
