  • Well, you can do it, but the 8.x upgrade documentation only covers upgrade from 7.7.x.
You will therefore have to consult 8.0 upgrade docs to see what is new/different with 7.6 - 8.0 upgrade as well 8.1.x upgrade docs that covers upgrade from 7.7.x.

    Exctract from 8.x Upgrade Portal

The NetBackup 8.1.2 Upgrade Guide provides an upgrade path from NetBackup version 7.7.x through NetBackup 8.1.2.  Information about required upgrade steps for older versions of NetBackup are removed from the NetBackup 8.1 and later guides.  This change simplifies the upgrade procedure for customers with more current versions of NetBackup.

For a successful upgrade from older NetBackup versions directly to 8.1.2, you must:

    • Refer to the NetBackup 8.0 Release Notes to understand the changes to NetBackup
    • Refer to the upgrade procedure that is listed in the NetBackup 8.0 Upgrade Guide
    • Combine the upgrade steps in the NetBackup 8.0 procedure with the upgrade steps in the NetBackup 8.1.2 Upgrade Guide

Veritas recommends that you refer to the NetBackup Release Notes and Upgrade Guide for each release, not only NetBackup 8.0, for details about these earlier upgrades.  These documents provide additional information about upgrade steps and the requirements that are helpful for a successful upgrade.

    One more thing:

Please include migration to newer OS in your plans as Windows 2008 will be EOL in the near future.

  • I don't believe so - the best option would be to first upgrade to 7.7.3, then go to 8.1.x

Don't forget that there are a number of changes along the way including changes to the NBDB, the catalogue and MSDP that need to be factored into any upgrade plan.

Refer to the 7.7.3 upgrade guide for the details you will need to take care of along the way. Unfirtunately sort will no longer help you upgrade from that old version.

    Hope this helps
