VMware restore - EXIT code 183 tar received an invalid archive

Hi guys!

I'm trying to restore individual files from VMware virtual machine backup, the job failed with status code 5  the restore failed to recover the requested files and EXIT code 183  tar received an invalid archive, tar log says: TAR stream can not be processed on this platform as denoted by the occurence of the  LF_EXTRAS @@.MeTaDaTa0 TAR header.

Environment:

Master / media server: AIX 5.3

NetBackup version: 7.0

VMware: 4.0

VMware Backup host: vCenter server, Windows 2003, virtual machine

Client: Windows 2003

The backups (full and incremental) run with no errors or exceptions. The restore has been launched from the NBU client of backup host or from media server but I've gotten the same results. I already verify the backup image, which is ok.

Policy configuration:

TypeFlashBackup-Windows

Policy storage unit : Tape library...

Perform off-host backup selected

*Client name selection:  VM hostname

*Virtual machine backup: Mapped full VM backup

*Transfer type: tryall

*Virtual machine quiesce: enabled

*Exclude unused and deleted blocks: yes

*Existing snpashot handing: Remove NBU

Client selected by browsing

Backup selection list: ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES

During the restore, the tape is mounted and positioned then  begins to read but after 6 secs finishes reading, after that the errors are logged.
Have any one of you see an error like this? I'm running out of ideas...

I'll really apreciate your help. Thanks!

  • The problem was solved after logged the NetBackup Client Service as domain administrator account not as Local System account.

Now, I'm able to restore individual files and the virtual machine as well.

    Thanks all!

  • Hopefully you have logged a Support call by now?

I was unable to find anything related to this error:

TAR stream can not be processed on this platform as denoted by the occurence of the  LF_EXTRAS @@.MeTaDaTa0 TAR header.
