Wildcards for exclusions but not backup selection?

PLEASE READ BEFORE RESPONDING

 

I'm not sure if I understand this correctly from my reading.

On a windows client, wildcards can only be used for files and NOT subdirectories when chosing locations for backup selection. However, I have set up wildcards for subdirectories in the exclude list under host properties and it does infact exclude those directories.

Why do i get error 71 for wildcarding directories in back up selection but not for exclusions?

example:

Netbackup doesn't like this:

C:\Users\*\Documents\filename.txt

But it will accept this:

C:\Users\username\Documents\*.txt

Does this rule not apply for the exclusion list?

 

Also, is there another option i can use for wildcarding directories on window based clients?

I'm only asking because we have a policy which has 8 or 9 different clients backing up all the same directories, and the only difference in the backup selection file paths are the usernames on each client. I know i can list each path seperately and netbackup will skip over the file paths it cannot find but I'm looking for simplicity.

BTW This is Netbackup 7.0 soon to be upgraded to 7.1

    I have had an idea about this one but have not had chance to test it (something to do with Christmas and the New Year!) so you may want to give it a go.

    As it sounds like exclusions of this format work but policy selection lists do not they you could try the following:

    Policy selection list : C:\Users\*

    Exclusion List: C:\Users\*

    Exceptions to Exclusion List: C:\Users\*\Documents\ and C:\Users\*\Favorites

    Let me know if this works

    If you have several clients in the same policy then your selection list applies to all of them.

    If one of them has an exclusion that specifically excludes the directoy (or one of them) that is in your list you will force a status 71 error.

    I think there is another was of specifying the file list wildcard and will have to look it up for you.

    Something like C:\Users\..\Documents\filename.txt

    my question was not how to add wildcards for exclusions. That I have done.

     

    What I'm asking for is a wildcard solution for "backup selection" as the wildcard operator (*) does not work for directories. The below example works and it will simply skip directories that don't apply to certain clients but like I said, simplicity and ease of reading is what I'm shooting for

     

    For example:

    I have client a, b, c, d, e, and f all under one policy. This is what my backup selection looks like.

    C:\Users\a\Documents

    C:\Users\a\Favorites

    C:\Users\b\Documents

    C:\Users\b\Favorites

    C:\Users\c\Documents

    C:\Users\c\Favorites

    C:\Users\d\Documents

    C:\Users\d\Favorites

    C:\Users\e\Documents

    C:\Users\e\Favorites

    C:\Users\f\Documents

    C:\Users\f\Favorites

     

     

    This what I'd like to have:

    C:\Users\(wildcard)\Documents

    C:\Users\(wildcard)\Favorites

    "There is a difference in behavior when using wildcards in the file list for Windows versus UNIX clients.  UNIX clients will allow file lists to contain a "*" wildcard for subdirectories.  This option is not available for Windows clients.  The wildcard can only be used in the file name portion of the file list."

    C:\Users\*\Favorites

      does not work, Status 71

    C:\Users\*

      works fine, Status 0
