AOFO required on W2K3 server?

I don't have AOFO installed on my Windows Server 2003 remote agent server, yet my backups are reporting a successfull backup using VSS (opening by AOFO) .

I also saw a thread which stated that AOFO is not necessary on 2003 as long as VSS was started.

Can you confirm that indeed AOFO is not necessary to backup open files (such as *.pst files) on a Windows Server 2003 server then?

Thank you.
