Another failed backup error that makes no sense

I am getting the following error for a number of backups and it makes no sense as we do not make use of Remote Agents. We use NDMP backups yet the following error message crops up:

Final error: 0xe000fefd - The Backup Exec server has lost the network connection to the Agent for Windows.

When expanding the NDMP log, I see the following:

NDMP Log Message: DUMP: creating "/vol/DCBL_SAHOST_VMOS_04/../snapshot_for_backup.79" snapshot.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Using Partial Volume Dump of selected subtrees
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Tue Dec 2 22:33:23 2014.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Dumping /vol/DCBL_SAHOST_VMOS_04 to NDMP connection
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: mapping (Pass I)[regular files]
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Reading file names from NDMP.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: mapping (Pass II)[directories]
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: estimated 145856486 KB.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: dumping (Pass III) [directories]
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: Tue Dec 2 22:38:27 2014 : We have written 8323399 KB.
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: job aborted
NDMP Log Message: DUMP: DUMP_NET IS ABORTED
NDMP Log Message: MOVER: Tape writing operation terminated
NDMP Mover Halted: Aborted

Any ideas on how to avoid this?

Thanks,

  • Do you have any kind of firewall or other network device that might have a short keep alive setting configured (in between the media server and the NDMP Storage device)?

The keep alive timeouts can kill the NDMP control connection because the backup ran for a long time and this could then be the cause of this type of error.

Oh and because the Backup Exec Remote Agent also uses a subset of the NDMP protocol you will from time to time see error messages that apear to relate to remote agents when you are actually doing an NDMP option backup.
