I'm not sure if I'll be able to use this methodology, but I think it has possibilities. I'm going to test it out...I'll let you know how well it works out. Thanks for taking the time to respond - I greatly appreciate it! Thanks - Joe BESR 7.0 and VM questions...hot site recovery? Greetings! I'm thinking about using BESR and VMware for disaster recoveryat a warm spare site, to minimize the amount of servers I have to have just sitting around. I know that BESR 7.0 has the option to create VM images directly bootable from VMware - I also know that VMware has a converter program that can take the sv2i image file and create a VM image file from it. The one real issue that I have is that BESRwants to create a VMware image the same size as the production drive it backed up. As I have a great deal of unused space on this drive, this produces some rather large images I have to manipulate....and as I'm intending for this to be a short-term emergency recovery process, I won't need the large quantity of free space. Is there any option to have BESR create a VM image with reduced free space? If not, I have a few options: 1) Repartition the production drives with less free space. Easy to do, but will require attention over time for disc utilization. 2) See if the VMware tool Vmconverter will offer this as an option. I've never used it before, and it currently does not work with BESR 7.0 image files....so I can't test this yet. Any other ideas or guidance??? Thanks for your consideration! -Joe Re: Bare Metal Restore Concept and implementation David, I have the same type of hardware as you - and I have the same concerns as you. Would you be so kind as to post the resolution, or your discoveries throughout this process? I'm beginning to think that 'bare-metal' means that the drive subsystem has been configured already (raid arrays already partitioned to the correct size), and then the info on the drives will be restored. Thanks - Joe Upgrade BESR from 6.5 to 7.0 - any issues? Greetings! I'm planning on upgrading BESR from 6.5 to 7.0 on a Dell Poweredge 2950, PERC 5i, USB RD1000, and Windows Server 2003 R2 (standard). If anyone has any suggestions as to things I should look at before/after this upgrade I'd appreciate it - the Symantec info regarding an upgrade seems a bit sparse - perhaps because it's such a simple, troublefree process? I read about the RD1000 eject issue with Win2003 SBS, and assume that it probably exists with Win2003 Standard as well. I also assume that recovery points created with BESR 6.5 are completely useable by BESR 7.0 (otherwise no one would ever upgrade!) Regardless, I appreciate any comments! Thanks - Joe Re: Unable to eject Dell RD1000 cartridge Greetings! I'm curious if there is any update on this issue? I'm getting ready to upgrade from 6.5 to 7.0 with a very similar setup, and I wanted to know if there is a resolution for this? Thanks - Joe Re: Agent for Sharepoint 2007??? Symantec originally promised this support by March 31, 2007. It is still not available, and Symantec will not project when it will become available. Do not hold your breath waiting for BE 11d to support Sharepoint 2007. Find a different solution. If you are curious for more information, search this forum for "sharepoint", sort by date, and read the history. Good luck - you'll need it. Re: Sharepoint 3 Support Status? Another month gone by..... Dean, Thanks for taking the time to respond - I've been out of the offfice until today. If I was licensed for the SQL agent, I suspect that this workaround would be appropriate. However, I'm only licensed for the Sharepoint agent. While it means something that Symantec has a technical solution for this backup...it really does not help me, unless I'm willing to spend more $$$. It appears that Symantec was taken by surprise by the release of Exchange 2007, and Sharepoint 2007. I suspect that this may be fallout from the acquision of Veritas - but perhaps not. Thanks for the link that provides access to the notification system. I appreciate the granularity, as I already receive more than enough email. With luck, this will work. Hopefully, this support will be forthcoming. I still do not have an impression of when it might be released, but due to the availability of an internal alternative (SQL agent), I have even less hope that Sharepoint 2007 agent support will be available in the near future. Regardless, I do appreciate you responding to this. I've been posting since February, and you were the first person from Symantec to post any valuable information...that's 4 months. Thanks- Joe Re: Sharepoint 3 Support Status? Another month gone by..... Symantec - any comment? Sharepoint 3 Support Status? Another month gone by..... Symantec, Any update on when Sharepoint 3.0 support will be forthcoming? We are now working on the 6th month without it since BE 11d was released.... Conversely, if you do not plan on releasing this supportsoon....let us know so we can make alternate arrangements. Regards, -Joe Re: Sharepoint 3.0 Backupexec support? Scott, Symantec claims that they will support WSS 3.0 at some time. They originally stated that support would be available by 1st quarter 2007 - which is why I went with BE 11d. However, there is not only no support for WSS 3.0 as of yet, Symantec has no desire to keeep their customers informed as to when they might expect this functionality. I personally have beeen waiting since February. Not quite what I expect from a company with Symantec's reputation and resources. Obviously, this support is not important to Symantec - nor are their customers that have been promised this support. One would think that the company that develops thesupposed premier backup package would have some idea of how to work with Microsoft, and release their supporting products within a few weeks of a major Microsoft release. Good luck - but don't hold your breath. Find another option - there is no telling how long you will have to wait. -Joe
