Backup job changes media label?

1. Are you taking backups to disk or to an external tape.


2. Backup exec does not automatically label a tape. Only a new tape is allocated a label the first time it is used.


3. Any tape that is shown in blue is a tape that is overwritable the one in black is Protected aginst overwrite.


4. When your tape becomes blue it means that the tape has become overwritable and that it has probabely been overwriteen and reused.


5. Please check if the job where it changes is set to overwrite or append, and the OPP and the AP on this tape at that time.

The backup is to external Tape. Since it is a single tape system, we created a media set (daily) whose properties are "overwrite protection: NONE" and "append period: 0 hours". A second media set (used) has similar properties and tapes are logically placed in this set after each use. The job is configured to use tapes from the first media set only. Each day the job is checked, the media is removed physically from the device and logically from the media set. The next days tape is placed in the device and then logically moved from the "used" media set to the "daily" set.
This works well 99+% of the time. Rarely we have the situation as described. When the job is checked it has run successfully, however the media set (daily) now shows 2 tapes (one black and one blue) The blue tape label is defaulted to 8MM000001, 2,3 etc.

Media (tape) used in Backup Exec is identified by its media label. When
new, blank, or unlabeled media is used during a backup operation, Backup
Exec automatically labels the media. This label consists of a prefix that
identifies the cartridge type, and an incrementing number. For example, if
the media is a 4mm tape, then the prefix would be 4M, followed by 000001.
The next media label generated for an unlabeled 4mm tape would be 4M000002,
and so on.
You can allow the media label to be assigned automatically by Backup Exec,
or you can specify a label prefix and number to be assigned for a type of
media. For example, you can specify that all 4mm media that are entered for
the first time into this installation of Backup Exec are labeled with a
prefix of ACCT, and with numbering starting from 1000.
You can specify another media type to be labeled with a prefix of FIN, and
with numbering starting at 10,000. Customizing labels in this manner can
help you recognize and organize media.

sorry but I should have written that the media was already labeled. We chose a similar numerical scheme such as the one described. This is not happening due to new or unlabeled media.

This issue could be due to database corruption please repair the databse as per the following technote and let us know if the repair operation ended in success or not.

Thank you for your input. I have run the database repair as suggested and will monitor this issue, since this only occurs sporadically.

Same issue has occured. The database repair utility apparently has not helped. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed.

Original issue has not been corrected by using the database repair utility. Last nights backup ended with the media label being changed.

What you are basically trying to tell us here is that: When you launch the backup job you physically and logically remove the old tape to 'used' media set and the 'daily' media set contains just one tape logically and the tape drive also contains the same tape physically.


After the job completes 0.1% of the times the media set 'daily' shows two tapes one black and the pther blue.


What we recommend is inventory and catalog the two tapes that you see in backup exec. next check which of these corresponds to the tape that is physically inserted in the tape drive.

Next find the physical tape that the other tape in Bcakup exec corresponds to.catalog and inventory this tape and update us on its contents.
