Backup on one tape

Hello,

I have upgraded to backup exec 2012 and the upgrade has now created 3 different jobs.

One for each server.

I have scheduled the jobs as this

Job 1) Exchange 2010 -> Overwrite

Job 2) File Server 1 -> Append

Job 3) File Server 2 -> Append.

There is one media set with overwrite protection but allow append all times.

Now the thing is that the system writes Job 2 & Job 3 on the same tape, but job 1 on a different tape.

The idea is that all the 3 jobs write on the same tape.

How can we achieve this?

Thx

  • We have erased the tapes and now it seems to be working...

    If i am not wrong, it will work only for the first occurance of the jobs. Because of erasing, all medias will be come Overwritable and not appendable. When the first job starts, it will overwrite a media (let's say media 1). Second and third jobs will append data to same media as that is the only appendable media available to use.

    But during the second run, BE will use an overwritable media (let's say media 2)to startoff with the first job. When second job starts, two medias media 1 (because of infinite append period) and media 2 will be qualified to use. BE will use media 1 because of the oldest allocation date. Which means you are again running into the same issue as earlier.

    To resolve this, you should set the append period to a value lesser than your jobs recurrence period. Set it to 20 hours (if the jobs are running daily). As the tape used on first day can be used only after 28 days which means you would be needing a minimum of 28 tapes with this strategy.

    Note: If your setup is running as you expected, go on without making the above said changes. Otherwise change the settings and provide us the updates.

  • Make sure job1 runs first and overwrites a tape, then schedule job2 to run, and last job3.

  • Your Overwrite job should start first followed by other two jobs to achieve what you are looking for.

    Also reduce the Append period so that the tape which used by job 1 ONLY will be available for appending the other backups.

  • Hello,

    This is the case

    Job one starts first with the overwrite action and job 2 & job 3 with append....

    On the media set the protection is overwrite 4 weeks and Infinite - Allow Append.
