I have a number of old DLT tapes that need to be erased. I work at a TV station where we use a bulk tape eraser to erase video tapes. Has anyone tried using a bulk eraser on DLT tapes?
IIRC, DLT tapes are "formatted" at manufacture, and if you "format" one in your tape drive, all it really does is recreate the header
If I indeed remember correctly, if you use a bulk tape eraser, your will wipe the factory formatting and have a useless tape. if you have sensitive, proprietary or classifed data on them, you may want to do this before you dispose of them, but that's about the only time you would want to use a bulk eraser.
