Media Insert

We backup our server everyday and lately some of our backups will stop 3/4 of the way through and will eject the media with the error "Please insert overwritable media into the drive" what are some of the possible causes? This does not occur on every backup?

  • I have had the same problem before.
If it wants a continuation tape,
even though there are some "apendable" tapes in the library,
    it wants an "overwritable" tape.
  • As Thomas says, all continuation tapes are overwrite, even if the job itself is Append

Is anything different on the nights that the job asks for a second tape?

    Same job?
    Same amount of data?
  • Just to verify, the job that is asking for an additional tape is an Overwrite job, correct?
  • Can you confirm how you know the backup job stops 3/4 of the way through the job, how much data you're backing up and what kind of tapes you're using?
  • There are quite a few settings involving the media use and change. A backup job can be either append or overwrite type. Media management is quite complicated in Backup Exec as I understand it. See more info at this link if you are interested:

Since you are in the BE 11d Forum, it introduced a new B2D management scheme for GRT backups. See the following link for more info on the GRT IMG management scheme:
