I own a NAS device, which is a SAMBA related storage box.It presents it self as a share on the network. When trying to point the backup to a open share, BESR is forcing me to enter a userid and password. It fails to put a destination_location_test file on it. It keeps bugging me an error: E7D10049 Device appears to be offline.Well... I can assure you it is not offline. I have already restarted the service using a backup admin account for my computer, with the same result.

I use BESR 7.0 on a Vista x64 Business PC.I cannot set share permissions on the Vista side, also, this storage device is a rather basic NAS device, but at least the share is open to everyone.

I presume you can manually copy files to and from the NAS share within Windows?

Yes, I have no trouble accessing the share on the NAS box from within the Vista explorer environment.Why does BESR need a userID password combination on a share that does not require authentication at all?Even when mapping a share to a fixed driveletter, BESR requires me to authenticate to it. This way you can test if it is NAS related, Vista or BESR.Take another windows based computer, create a share and set it open for all users. Use this share fo RP storage and see what happens.But I can imagine BESR is designed to always ask for credentials, but it could still be Smabo or Vista(security) related. Let us know what you findings are!Regards

I am working on a Microsoft Workgroup environment. Two Vista PC's and a storage box (LANDISK) within the same network. I would suggest to plugin such a device within the test environment and investigate this situation. I can get to the NAS share from within my Vista explorer without any problems.
The storage share shows up as a network drive, but BESR 7.0 has trouble to access it.
In fact, BESR writes down a check-file (it contains zero bytes) whenever I point the destination to it (\\storage\share or Z:\) but the problem stays. Apparently it can create a dummy file, but cannot write to it ?

After that, the error pops up: E7D10049 Device appears to be offline.

Please check it.

Hi Ray,

Have you tried setting the following system variable (it's important that it be a system variable), rebooting the system and trying again?

The variable is as follows:

Variable name: V2i_BUFFERED
Variable value: defined

Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. Please focus on the state where BESR 7 puts a dummy file on the share after selecting the \\storage\share as a destination. The file is a check-file and 0 bytes.

BESR 7 then notifies the device 'seems to be offline'. But as I told you, the device is online all the time. I also can't tell if BESR uses the authentication on the share, because whatever I put in, the result stays the same.

Hi Ray,
I understand your setup, but eventhough I would suggest to use the other XP workstation as test for RP-storage. Create a shared folder with the same security settings as on the NAS and try this.Some other things that has to asked:
your NAS does not require propriety client software?
Have you tried all credential syntaxes: workgroup\userid; NasDevicename\userid; NasHostName\userid, userid, etc, etc.
