A few days ago I had an issue with doing a system restore using Ghost 15. I went to that forum for help and learned that Symantec was going to discontinue Ghost and recommended users "check out" SSR 2013 with its free trial. I downloaded the free trial and eventually learned it would not install unless I first remove Ghost. That wasn't from anything that I saw when the SSR installation failed; that happened without any additional information. However, I did eventually find my way to this forum and a helpful Guru pointed out the issue and also that I could always re-install Ghost if I wasn't happy with SSR. I uninstalled Ghost, installed SSR, and started backing stuff up. Now, if one of the things you want to do is a full system restore (my primary interest)then you need a recovery disk. SSR will make a recovery disk for you and all you need to do is provide an activation key which you don't get with the trial version. No problem, as all I need to do is install Ghost. But I can't install Ghost until I uninstall SSR. And SSR WILL NOT UNINSTALL. Whenever I try to uninstall it there's an Error 2738 and something about a VBasic error. So now I have a trial verision of a program that I can't use and a paid for program I can no longer load. I guess it can all be fixed if I pay Symantec for an activation key for a program that I'm not sure I want in the hopes it will maybe allow me to upgrade to a latter version that can uninstall so I can install the program I uninstalled so I could evaluate the Free Trial. To put it another way, I may have to pay Symantec to I can remove their free software and load back the software I paid them for as well. And, even it it turns out there's a simple, and hopefully less expensive, way out of this I've still wasted a lot of time on what should be a free trial of a comercial product which appears to be more of an alpha test. (If I sound upset, it's because I really am)2.4KViews3likes12CommentsSystem Recovery vs. Backup Exec
We have been using / recommending Backup Exec to our clients and are considering System Recovery instead. I found this in another post about this topic. Is everthing correct? Any other comments? Can do bare metal restore to SAME/SIMILAR hardware e. easy to take tapes offsite BE System Recovery (BESR) a. image based b. cannot backup to tape c. cannot restore individual email (restore whole information store from image file) d. can do Hardware Independent Restore e. can be set to backup incremental every 15 mins with almost no impact on performance f. easily import image to VM in case of total failure (i.e. server room fire)4.1KViews3likes3CommentsRecommended NAS devices for use with Symantec System recovery 2013
Can anyone recommend a NAS device (make or brand) that is compatible with this piece of software? Currently I back up 2 x client PCs Win 7 64 bit,to external drives but as belt and braces, I'd like to add both backups from the machines to a NAS device. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. I am trying to create a Linux 5.7 recovery disk and am getting the error message below: # createSRD --iso=/mnt/backup/rhel-server-5.7-source-dvd.iso -d /mnt/backup/customSRD.iso Creating SRD...Please Wait [ ######################## ] 36% Could not get distribution info from media. Please check the media. This would seem to imply a problem with the iso file but I have tried 2 different iso files and get the same error message. Anyone have any ideas on this one? Hello, We are currently reviewing BESR2010 as a solution for maintaining an offsite image that is updated nightly. What we are trying to figure out is how exactly it works. The server that will be image is running SQL Server and has several large databases on it. Say the database file is like 50GB and we set up a scheduled job to update the image every night, will BESR2010 copy the entire 50GB database file everytime it runs or will it somehow just upload the changes in the file. We just want to avoid copying a 50GB file over a vpn every night. Thanks in advance.802Views2likes10CommentsCan BESR 2010 replace Backup Exec?
I am evaluating BESR 2010 and it can restore file from the image. I am currently have Backup Exec but I like functionality of BESR. So I am wondering if I can deploy BESR 2010 and completely get rid of Backup Exec. I have SQL, Exchange and Sharepoint in my environment. Will it work well with these database? Thank you in advance!854Views2likes11CommentsDisabled features in System Recovery Desktop Edition on Windows Server?
Hi all Apologies if the answer to my question is elsewhere, but I could not find a concise answer and I am new to Symantec products. I've purchased a bunch of System Protection Suite licenses that comes with System Recovery Desktop Edition 2013. The product information http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH201318 does not even talk about Desktop Edition, so I assume it falls back to SSR product info, which suggests that I can install the product to a Windows Server. It is my understanding the installer will work because it assumes a Trial install. But after reboot I will be asked for my licence key for Desktop Edition. So my questions are for Windows Server: Will my Desktop Edition licence key work at this point, or will it be rejected and I wasted my time? What features will be disabled if the licence is accepted? Would it be better to do a custom install and exclude those disabled features that will never be able to be used? I understand that I won't be able to protect my Server with the product, but other features like Agent deployment and so forth might be useful for managing the Desktops, but the full Trial makes it hard to know how it will act in production and if it is even worth installing if I have the System Recovery Monitor. Thanks for your thoughts. MartySolved895Views1like4Commentsdoes SR 2013 R2 support recovery to different hardware for windows 2003?
hi there, in summary, my only question is this: does "symantec system recovery 2013 r2" support the recovery to different hardware for windows 2003 r2 machines? please read the details to understand why i'm asking. thank you! i'm completely new to "system recovery 2013 r2", and i'm attempting to evaluate its use in restoring windows servers to different hardware. my first test case is using windows 2003 r2. i spoke yesterday with a sales engineer, and he said i would need to install the server version of sr 2013 r2 on the source machine, and then create the sr boot disk. i went to install sr, andgot the following warning: "This system does not meet the requirements to install the Symantec System Recovery Disk creation utility. The recovery disk creation utility feature is supported on Windows 2008 (and later) and Windows 7 (and later). Note: Symantec does not ship the recovery disk with System Recorery 2013 R2 and hence includes a utility in the installer to create a recovery environment." the sales documentation and the compatibilty list on the symantec website specifically lists windows 2003 r2 as supported, and the engineer i spoke with yesterday also said that it would work. so i went to look for the downloadable .iso instead, but i found a tech article (http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH225888) that specifically states that downloadable iso's are no longer provided. any guidance would be appreciated. --aaron1KViews1like3CommentsSymantec System Recovery as Norton Ghost replacement
Hello, My organization had been using ghost to image PCs, and some issues arose this past summer with a set of new Dell Vostros being unable to boot from the USB drives we had used to boot previous machines to capture and deploy images. We were hoping to update to a newer version of ghost to accomplish this andI was told that ghost is going away, but they have replaced it with another product, Symantec System Recovery because theycould not get Ghost to work with Windows 8 so they had to create another product that would. I was also told that it will lso image Windows 7 as well. I have downloaded the free trial of Symantec System Recovery, but have not yet tried it. Are there any people in a similar situation that have found success using SSR in this capacity? Would anyone recommend another product or tool to replace ghost instead? Thank you very much for your responses. -Chris658Views1like3Comments
