0xe000fec2 - A failure occurred accessing the SnapShot handle.

Hello

I get the above error during the Verify stage of a backup operation.

I have the ADBO and AOFO options selected.

I have Backup Exec 2010 R3 installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 SP1 server, and have deployed the Remote Agent for Windows System and Advanced Open File Option to the target machine, which is running the same OS.

The backup operation appears to succeed; it is during the Verify operation that the failure occurs.

In the event viewer, I can see the Virtual Disk Service start at the same time as the backup operation, but then I see it stop before the backup and verify stages are complete; could this be the problem?

Any help is much appreciated.

    Why do you want to use AOFO ?
    If your servers are (minimum) windows 2003 they can use Windows VSS (Volume Shadow Copy) to backup open files.

    From the linked technote:

    "Solution:


    To resolve this issue, perform one of the following:

    1.  Add valid serial numbers for Advanced Open File Option on the Backup Exec (tm) media server (see the Related Documents section for more information)"

    I believe that the AOFO option is part of the Remote Agent for Windows systems (according to the Symantec website). I have the Remote Agent licensed, and installed on both the server and the target machine.

    "2.  Install the Advanced Open File Option on the system to be backed up before running the backup job (see the Related Documents section for more information)"

    I have already installed this on server and target machine.

    "3.  Clear the Advanced Open File Option check box from the backup job properties and then run the backup job (Figure 1) without the Advanced Open File Option."

    No - I want to use AOFO.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi James,

     

    When you push-install or manually install the RAWS agent, AOFO is an option...you also don't need to license it anymore in BE 2010. All you're doing on the media server when installing it and selecting AOFO is unlocking it.

    If you're backing up databases it is advisable NOT to use AOFO...rather split data and database backups from each other.

    if you really want to use AOFO on that server, uninstall the agent, make sure your media server is fully patched, and then do a push-install from your media server to the remote server.

    I want to use AOFO as I'm new to the whole backup thing (inherited Backup Exec from a colleague who left the company) and I was under the impression it was the only way to back up locked files.

    If what you suggest is the best way to do it, then I'll take your advice and use VSS, however not being very experienced with backing up could you push me in the right direction to set this up?

    Hi CraigV,

    I upgraded to R3 yesterday, and pushed the agent with the AOFO option ticked to the target machine, so I know everything is patched.

    I'm not backing up databases (yet!).

    The other thread contributor mentioned that I don't need to use AOFO to backup locked files, and that I can use VSS...does this sound like the best way to do it? If so, could you advise on how I do this please?

    I am surprised that you are getting this error during the verify phase.

    What is the OS of the target machine and what device are you backing up to?  Is your media server virtualised?

    For a test, if you turn off verification, does the job completes successfully?

    The target OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 SP1, and the media server is not virtualised.

    It still fails with verification off.

    I can see in the application logs on the media server that the VSS service starts at the same time as the backup, but shuts down due to idle timeout 3 minutes later. The backup takes about 15-20 mins, so shouldn't the VSS service be kept running for this whole process?

    On the target machine, the VSS service starts up at the same time the backup job starts, and stops 1 second before the job fails, 15 mintues later.

    This all looks to me as though the VSS service on the OS is to blame, but why is not remaining up for the duration of the backup procedure?

    I've spotted some more information in the log files, relating to ADBO:

    V-79-57344-34100 - ADBO: Offhost backup initialization failure on: "\\server.domain.com\C:".

Snapshot provider error (0xE0008534): Backup Exec could not find a Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) software or hardware provider on the media server. To use offhost backup, a VSS provider must be installed on both the media server and on the remote computer.

Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.

V-79-57344-34108 - An unexpected error occurred when cleaning up snapshot volumes. Confirm that all snapped volumes are correctly resynchronized with the original volumes.

    It still fails with verification off.

    Now it makes sense.

    1) Did you check the Eventlog on the remote server to see what the error is?

    2) Did you check that you have met all the requirements for doing off-host backups?  See page 922 and onwards of the Admin Guide

    3) Have you tried to do a normal backup?

    I ran the backup without ADBO and AOFO and it ran fine.

    Infact it used AOFO!

The snapshot provider used by VSS for volume C: - Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0 (Version 1.0.0.7).

    It's strange, since I didn't actually select AOFO...but I'm happy it's working. I don't really need ADBO as the backups are done overnight when the server resources a free.
