backing up from a QNAP

Hi all

I'm trying to set up a backup job to backup a share from a QNAP, i've added the path to "user-defined selections" but every time i try and tick the box i got the following error - "Access is denied", i've told Backup exec to use the user account i made for the qnap, i can map the drive with in windows using the log in details i've made but backup exec wont let me access it.

Am i doing it the right way or am i missing something here?

Thanks

  • I believe the same happens with backups also with a mapped network drives. Backup from and restore to mapped network drives using BE for windows servers is not possible.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH43305

Explanation from colin about mapped network drives backup: "Backup Exec cannot backup a mapped drives because drive maps are part of the profile of the logged on user and Backup Exec is designed to work when no user is logged in using service level access that does not load the user profile - hence no drive map."

  • ...and you've added the QNAP's username/password to BE itself?

  • i found the problem, i had the QNAPs log in details on BE but it still wasnt working, i ended up adding the server log in details to the QNAP, restarted services and it worked fine

but now i got a problem when doing a restore to it :-(

The error i got when doing a restore to it is -

Job ended: 24 July 2012 at 17:22:39 Completed status:

Failed Final error: 0xe0008488 - Access is denied.

    Final error category: Security Errors

I dont know why i'm getting this as i can back it up fine frown

Make sure you have given the write permission to this account on QNAP.

    Thanks...

  • The user as got read and write permissions to the account on the QNAP

i can map the drive and make new files and also edit files on the share using the same user, BE gives the error when doing a restore to the same share tho

  • Quick reply, I was editing my last reply to include this TN and got access denied laughmessage...

Have a look at this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH160017

  • i can now do a restore but only if the share is not mapped to the system surprise

if the share is mapped then the restore fails with - Error : e000846a - The resource could not be restored because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent. Make sure that the correct version of the Remote Agent is installed and running on the target computer.

If the share is not mapped to the system then it restores fine

    is this right?

  • think i got it down to a T now.....

backuping and restore of the share needs to be un-mapped from the system, if the share is mapped then the backup and restore fails, i've got two shares which i can backup and restore fine if the share is not mapped (backup ends with a status 1 sometimes)

i'm still have a play with it but i think i've got what i needed now laugh
