  • What do you mean by not being able to restore from your incremental backups?  You cannot see the backup sets?  You have to provide more details if you want help.

  • To add to what pkh said, do you have the full backup prior to the Incremental? You need the Full + all the Incremental to the point you want to restore.

  • Not that we cannot restore, we do have full backups and we also have separate incremental backups. The challenge is we needed to restore an sql instalnce of yesterday using an incremental backup we have. but it does not seem to do the job.

  • I may have missed something here.  You said that the restore does not do the job, but the joblog shows that the restore was successful.

  • Good thanks for the observation, the question is if you do not do full backup and only do incremental backups can u restore all the data lost say the previous day? this could the challenge we are facing. restore is successfull but the information restored is not showing atall. Case is the sql database we backed up when we run the above restore is shows successfull but I do not see the data. Could it be that the method we used is not fine.

     

    Gives us a lot of dought using BEC 2012 going forward?

     

    Any further help from Symantec would be bvery useful and unfortunately the local support is not there in my country.

  • Is your incremental backup a log backup?  If so, then you need to restore the full backup and then the log backup.  You cannot just restore the log backup.

  • Yes we have restored the full backup as at end of last month. If we now restore the log does it update us with recent info?

  • Yes, provided the log covers the period from the full backup until now.  You also need to restore the log immediately after you restore the full backup.  You cannot restore the full backup, update the database and then restore the log.

  • To add to what pkh said you need to restore all the incremental till the point you want to restore since the full backup., Example you performed a Full on Friday and Incremental from Mon-Thur and if you want to restore set from Thursday you would need to first restore -

    Friday Full (SQL restore options use leave the database nonoperational; additional transaction logs or differential backups can be restored)

    Monday Incremental (SQL restore options use leave the database nonoperational; additional transaction logs or differential backups can be restored)

    Tuesday Incremental (SQL restore options use leave the database nonoperational; additional transaction logs or differential backups can be restored)

    Wednesday Incremental (SQL restore options use leave the database nonoperational; additional transaction logs or differential backups can be restored)

    Thursday Incremental (SQL restore options use leave the database ready to use; additional transaction logs or differential backups cannot be restored)
