Custom Barcode for Tape Media

I have been assigned the task of researching the ability of creating custom barcodes for the tape media used in an Exabyte backup with Veritas. I am not having much luck and would appreciate any advice I can get about how, or if, this can be done. I do not have exprience working with Exabyte or Veritas.
