Are you running any antivirus application? The file values referenced by either the archive bit or modified time methods could be changed by the scan.  Also check to find out if there are other utilities or another type of backup software running.

Checked the admin guide, I think you are right. If use option "modified time", diff job will backup all data when the last full job is failed.

I changed to archived bit and rerun again.

But it is strange that the Percent Complete is 0% even the job has backup most files and only few files cannot backup.

And the job status is different in CAS and MMS.

In CAS, the status of the Full job is Resumed. Refer to the byte count, the job is almost completed. And then it auto retried and failed the second time with the same byte count.

In MMS, the status of the two jobs are failed, not resumed.

I noticed the first job has ever run verify operation before it retried. Seems there is probelm when verifying the first job and then BE retried it.

Do you know the why the job status will become resumed and auto retry? Thanks

Any problem if enable the option "Enable checkpoint restart"

If the backup job fails due to certain reasons, then the backup job will automatically retry based on error-handling rules (if enabled) and if checkpoint restart is enabled.

Check the job log on the MMS as to why the backup is reporting as failed. That should give an idea on how to prevent the job failure.
 

I disable checkpoint restart option and rerun the diff job. The job will become resumed and then retried and failed. The failed cause is 4 files cannot backup due to access is denied. Same error when we use it in BE2010. We have checked with symantec before, they said this error is caused by EV archive enable on these files and the problem did not fix yet. But in BE2010, the job will not auto retry. We can accept the failed status as it is a known issue. We don't want the job auto retried for this error because it will use double space and backup same data. In BE2010, it will only retry when the job is recovered and byte count is 0. How to fix it? Thanks

Why not add exclusions for these specific 4 files ?

Secondly, check error-handling rules are enabled or not under Configuration & Settings - Error-handling rules.

Always appreciated for your help. Check the Error - Handling Rules, only the items with Enabled status are in use, right?

Then there are two items are enabled. Checkpoint Restart when Job status is failed . And Recovered jobs failed is enabled.

I did not change the setting. And when I run the full job for the first time with backup method for files used By modified time, it failed but not retry. 

Is this global setting? If I did not check it in individual job, will this rule apply to the job by default?
