Individual Exchange Mail Item Restore using GRT

Environment:  BE 2010 r3 - WS 2003 - ES 2007 R3

Question:  When doing a restore of individual mail items, do  the options for "log recovery options when restoring the Information Store" in the restore job properties come into play when I am not restoring an information store, but am just restoring individual mail items?  I want to confirm that no transaction logs are restored.

I have read through the instructions for setting up the restore from CraigV and  the post by Remko de Koning stating that the IS would not be dismounted, which are very helpful.  I just want to be sure that I will not be restoring transaction logs or affecting my active users in any way.

thank you, I appreciate the help.

  • Hi,

I've never had logs being restored. THey should only be staged temporarily...you're not restoring an entire Information Store.

I've done plenty of single item mail restores while Exchange was live and never had issues doing further backups, or users complaining of inconsistencies with email.

    Thanks!

  • Have a look @ the first response from a similar post - https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/restore-single-mailboxes-information-store

  • Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who has responded.  My restore was successful as soon as I used the credentials I use for the Exchange backup, which are different from my backupexec admin default account.

I will mark CraigV's response as solution, although VJware's post was helpful, as well.

Bottom line:  Use CraigV's HowTo https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/restoring-exchange-or-individual-mailboxesitems-using-backup-exec-howto  and review VJWare's link, above, as well.  Also, make sure you use the same account that you use to backup up your exchange server to do the restore.

  • In this case, you should split the solution between the two answers.  See my article below on how to do so.
