Test run succeeds %100 but actual job fails randomly

Are you backing up the file server in your office or the one in the datacentre?

Post the error messages.

What is the exact error with which the backups are failing??

Also as you are trying to backup the DFS data make sure that they are selected from under Shadow Copy Components of that server in the backup selection list.

hi Sush, here's the first error. It's the same error # over and over, just the file path that differs.

V-79-57344-65033 - Directory not found. Cannot backup directory \User?Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\GroupShare\GroupShare\Groupdata\MSA\Accounts\MS AUSTRALIA\READATHON\2009 Program and its subdirectories.

and here's the second error

The backup job fails at a different byte count \ progress every time which makes it impossible to track down to a particular file, which I don't think is the cause of this anyway.

Have you tried to recreate the selection list to rule out any corruption in the current list?

Sorry Craig, are you able to expand on that? I have a folder structure as follows;

\\FileServer02\D:\GroupShare\Groupdata\ (then department folders under there). This D: volume is replicated from FileServer01 in our Datacentre to FileServer02 which is in our office (doubling as DR site).

We have a Backupexec 2010 R3 job set as follows.

\\Fileserver02\Shadow Copy Components\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\ from there, all the subfolders are selected.

Initially I was just trying to backup files directly from the D: volume, but that failed because it's DFSR data...

The weird thing is, the backup job with every subfolder selected fails at random times\byte counts. Test runs work %100.

If I run a backup job of just one sub folder, it works %100.

I'm suspecting it might be something due to folder length perhaps? Some of the folders\file paths in the department folders are ridiculously long, but these backed up on our old setup just fine...

We have more testing to do, going to run individual backup jobs on the department folders individually.

There is a Known Issue about backup failure of DSFR data with long paths, but the failure is not the same as yours.

You should backup your DSFR data by selecting the shadow copy component and not the folders directly.  See this document

I notice, looking at this, that some areas have the DFSRPrivate folder selected and some don't. Should this be selected or not? (I assume not).

ok sorry, here is the pic again. restoring isn't the problem either, it's the backup :-) not even at the point where i can do a test restore as i can't do a full file backup :-)
