enterprise vault storage migration

I am about to move my vault store partitions to new storage attached to the existing vault server.

I am following the steps listed here:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH35742

1. set vault into backup mode, stop services.

2. copy data

3. edit SQL database to contain new locations

4. start services and clear backup mode

I currently have 6 vault store partitions, 5 closed, 1 open.

My question is: Do I need to have backup mode set and services stopped to copy the 5 closed partition data?

I'm concerned at the amount of downtime required to copy the complete set.

  • Not sure if it is required to set the closed partitions in backup mode, but if you are concerned about the downtime during copy, why don't you pre-copy all data with robocopy in front (just with the services running and not in backup mode) and run a robocopy again at the final migration stage. Then robocopy only has to check all files/folders for changes. This does take less time than copy all data.
