Journal Database keeps growing

Not sure if anyone has a good solution for this one

Running EV9 and Exchange 2010 sp1 and since we moved the journalling over too the new exchange server we have noticed the exchange database keeps growing and doesn't shrink

we went through and made the changes to make sure

single item recover disabled

Litigation hold disabled

Discovery search disabled

deleted items 1 day

deleted mailboxes 0 days

don't wait for backup before running maintanence

But still it wants to grow

  • Spoke to Microsoft on it and they're placing a bug/fix report in for us as he has 7 cases of this

journal database is not reclaiming the white space but still there is no bug filed for the same and this is in investigation stage. Moving mailbox/mailboxes to a new database is the only thing that reduces the size of the database is the workaround for this issue as of now.

  • So the journal mailbox is being emptied by EV but the Exchange Database grows?

Is maintanence actually running against it?

  • Hey Tony,

Yes I've got maintance running 24/7 to see if it would stop growing

exchange journal mailbox is empty or as near as can be  and the rest is processed by ev

  • and its definitely the database files growing and *not* the transaction logs?
And EV isnt shoving the items in to Failed To Expand/Store/Copy folders?

  • Not sure but when you state:

don't wait for backup before running maintanence

Do you mean that "Remove Safety Copies: Immediately after archiving" is set in EV or just from a pure Exchange perspective ?

If "Remove Safety Copeis" are set to "After Backup" (without the immediately for journaling option selected) on the Vault Store, then EV will wait for the backup of EV partitions to take place before it deletes the items in the journal mailbox.

Also, the database will not shrink in terms of file size, you'll just get "white space".

To shrink the database you'll need to run "offline defrag".

  • Couple updates

It's the database file that is increasing not the transaction logs.

Also what I meant by the "Don't wait for the backup"  was on the exchange 2010 database limits tab they're is a check box they're to permantely delete items

if this was just white space issue i wouldn't be worried but when they're is nothing sitting in the failed folders for ev within outlook and the database itself is growing as well
