Migrating EVault 7 to Evault 10

Hello All,

I am currently in the processing of creating a migration plan for a customer. This includes entire infrastructure migraiton of products like

  • Active Directory 2003, Exchange Migration, Evault Migration, Blackberry Migration.

The source domain consists of the following:

  • Active Directory 2003
  • Exchange 2003 (SP2)
  • Enterprise Vault 7 (dont know the service pack yet)

The target domain consists of the following

  • Active Directory 2008
  • Exchange 2010 SP1
  • Enterprise Vault 10

I now need to know how to migrate the data from Enterprise Vault 7 to Enterprise Vault 10. I am very new to Enterprise Vault product and would need any document that describes in detail (step-by-step) the exact migration procedure from EV 7 to EV 10. Is there a way that i can connect the source Enterprise Vault Server version 7 to the target Vault Server version 10 and migrate data seamlessly .... (please pardon my ignorance, am really a noob on EV)

Cheers

  • Hello PD

Exporting an archive to PST should be in the Administrator Guide of Enterprise Vault (usually c:\program files\enterprise vault\documentation), or can be found here:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH140744

Mailbox migration is done via Ex2010. look for docs from ms.

    See: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee633491.aspx

    and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876952.aspx as starting point

in the ev7 environment, on the ev-server, open IE, goto localhost/enterprisevault/usage.asp

That will show you the amount of archives, data etc. It might be possible to export the archives back into the mailboxes in Ex2003, then move the mailboxes. EV10 will then archive the mailboxes from the new environment. Ingestion rate of pst's is about the same as archiving, but if you have time (weekend...) you can get good speeds.

  • The upgrade of EV requires you to upgrade through all releases:

    7 -> 7.5 -> 8 -> 9 -> 10

If money is not an issue, you can use an 3rd party tool to migrate directly to ev10 (TransVault or Archiveshuttle)

If you have small archives export everything to PST from EV, then import in 10.

If you have small archives export everything back to exchange, move mailboxes.

    good luck.

  • Hi Gertjan,

Thank you for the prompt response. This migration that i am planning for does not have an option to upgrade Enterprise Vault.

I already have two datacenters ready with the target environment of Exchange 2010 and EV 10 already installed and the source datacenter with EV7.

I guess i will have to go with the option of PST Migration or Mailbox Migration itself. Would you be able to provide me the link to the documentation of this process ? Also, what is the normal throughput (time taken) for the data to be imported to the new EV10.?

    Regards,

    PD

  • I would make sure to test your process in a lab environment before working with production data.  What you want to do would be a challenge for the most experienced EV admin.

I'm pretty sure you won't find a any technote that will give step-by-step instructions for a data-only cross-forest migration.

If your users have mailbox shortcuts, be aware that they won't work in the new environment if they are simply migrated over with the rest of their email.

If you migrate the EV data using PST exports/imports, you can create new shortcuts to the imported data, but they won't be in the same locations they were before.  They'll be organized under a new top-level folder you designate.

If you have the time and space in Exchange, you could export archives back to their original mailboxes, then move the mailboxes and re-archive into the new system.  There are some potential issues with this method though.  Since they're on EV 7, their archived email would go back to the folders where they were originally archived.  If users move/organize/delete shortcuts, this might be a problem for them.

On of the 3rd party tools mentioned above will make your migration much easier.
