Moving Vault Stores

Wondering if this is even possible.

So our ev9 has growen and we want to redesign and move the vault stores.

Is this even possible

vault stores are spread over 3 drives just now g: h: i:

I am hoping to archive anything older than 18 months to tape so I'd like to have everything put onto 1 large drive instead of 3 separate ones

Forgot to say was looking at the video on http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH35742

But I found on a couple partitions there is overlap on the year/month/day folders

can't they combine into one

  • You can refer to this video on how to move vault store partitions:

    A
nd it is possible to use Collection and Migration to move older items to secondary storage, such as NetBackup, however it will require collections (CAB Files) to be enabled, and also can lead to slower responses for things such as re-indexing (if you're converting from an EV9 32bit index to an EV10 64bit index for instance)

And also If you move all the partitions to a single drive, you have to account for the fact that when you pull the data back from tape, you may run out of room

For instance if you have Three 200GB drives full, and you export 150GB each to tape, thats 450GB
You then put the three drives down in to a 300GB drive, you have 150GB of live data, and 150GB free
But if you need to pull data back, you have 1/3 the space that you need for that to happen

Which again could happen in a big DA export, a big EVSVR verification scan, upgrading indexes etc

Also I have seen times when people put the wrong retentions on tapes, they migrate to NBU and a year later all the data is lost because the 1 year tape has been erased, and with it, all the migrated data

  • Thanks I was watching the video and had some follow-up questions I forgot to add.

Where i've got overlap with folder names

    G:\Enterprise Vault Stores\User Mailboxes Ptn1\2011\03-19\E\021

    F:\Enterprise Vault Stores\ISC User Mailboxes Ptn1\2011\03-19\E\021

  • The overlap of folder names won't matter because they are in different directories.  You would need to keep the folder above the year so User Mailboxes Ptn1 and ISC User Mailboxes Ptn1 respectively.

  • Yeah, if you're talking about Merging vault stores, well, you'll really have to keep the vault stores and partitions seperate, the folders can exist on the same drive, they just cant share the same folder names etc, you need to keep them seperate

The only way to do a vault store merge is to use move archive or a 3rd party tool such as Archive Shuttle, Transvault, Akaibu, Merge One etc to move the archives from each of the vault stores in to one giant vault store

But even that I would recommend against as you would be overloading the vault store itself

  • Thanks Tony,

I missed the fact that it's in a ptn1 and then 2 and 3 folder

fortunately to date no large DSA or recovery's

so am hoping that if I free up 500gb I can give them 300gb back and keep 200gb for growth and recalls.

Also can anyone confirm if in EV10 and EV11 there is still support for IBM System Storage DR550 for the tape migration

  • Hello Wilson,

IBM DR 550 as of now with EV 10.0 the Decision is still pending..

For update you can subscribe to the Compatibility list by clicking on the following link.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38537

And if any changes happens in future you will get a notfication.

    I hope this Helps!!!
