Backup Hangs - BPFIS Process

Hi Forum,

My setup is on Sol. 10 6.5.5 (MASTER/MEDIA)

I m trying to back up a W2K3 32 bit client having nbu 6.5.5 on it. When the jobs starts as per schedule it goes upto begin writing but hangs there only. At this point on the client hosts bpbkar and bpfis processes are there.

When i manually kill bpfis the job starts writing and completes....this is happening for multiple attempts.

When i checked the same architect server backing up on same setup the bpfis process goes from client hosts once the job is fired.....

Any suggestions/solution on this pls.

Thanks in Advance

  • Due to Microsoft Visual Studio....the process was getting hanged...same has been taken care now and backup is taking place....

    Thanks all for ur suggestions...

  • Have you checked the client specific snapshot settings in the Master server configuration.

    use "# bpclient -client <client name> -L

Check if WOFB_enabled = yes and WOFB_FIS is set to VSS.

It is must to pace the "Volume Shadow Copy service" on windows 2003 client either as "Manual" or "Automatic started".

clear the temperory files (if any) from <install path>\Veritas\NetBackup\temp location.

It is also worth trying by unchecking the multiple data streams.

If any of the above doesn't help, suggest you to enable bpcd, bpfis and bpbkar logs to have a better idea on whats going wrong.

  • Also its worth trying a backup without snapshots enabled to make sure it is problem with snapshots.

  • Windows Open File Backup. Host Properties/Master Servers/master/Client Attributes. If the client isn't in the list add it - NB uses VSP by default. Check VSS is being used in the WOFB tab.

Have you tried simply re-booting the client?

There is an 'old' T/N with a few tests & checks you may want to try (#1 & #2?):

How to verify Windows Open File Backup operation using VSSADMIN and BPFIS before contacting Symantec Technical Support
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH47808

"vssadmin list writers" or "vssadmin list providers" showing errors on client?

Have you any logs on the client already? (bpfis, bpcd & bpbkar as already mentioned above)

  • Hi,

    root@MST01 # bpclient -client RGSS-P290XSCEUR-NW -L

There is no streaming enabled for this backup.

I will be enabling logs now for troubleshooting further.

  • Hi Andy,

I have cross verified i m using VSS only...

Reboot of client is also taken ...but problem remains the same.

I will be soon posting the output of vssadmin list....... and logs.

    • Check the event viewer
    • Got logs? Did you check the bpfis? What's the last line?
    • Manually run a bpfis create
    • vssadmin create - does that work?
  • Due to Microsoft Visual Studio....the process was getting hanged...same has been taken care now and backup is taking place....

    Thanks all for ur suggestions...
