DR strategy for Tape Based Backups

We have tape based backups on both primary and secondary sites. Can we use SLP for DR? What are the disadvantages?

  • Are you using a single master server and multiple media servers at each location?  Or are you using separate master servers at each location?

Assuming you have one master server, and your goal is to keep a copy of the backup images at opposite locations, it is possible to back up data an the first site to tape, use the SLP to duplicate to an "offsite" tape, and physically take that offsite tape to your other site.  The catalog knows where the data is stored on the tape, all you have to do is make sure the media server at the other location is allowed to restore from tapes owned by another media server.

If you have separate master servers, there is no easy way to do this.  You would have to physically take the tapes to your other site and manually import them all.
