Drive Scan host not active

Hello ,

we are facing above problem in our environment. When we up one drive on any media server , we are getting drive scan host is not active error.This error is getting almost all media servers , which we tried to up the drive.

 

Master Server : Solaris 10

NBU : 7.5.0.6

 

Media servers : AiX/Wndows

 

Please Suggest.

    Nothing short term.

    You firstly need to cut down on number of media servers or stand up another master server.
    Symantec's recommendation is a maximum of 100 media servers (although there is no physical limit).

    Then you need to carefully calculate number of device entries in the emm database. This includes media servers, tape drives, storage servers, disk pools, storage units.
    For example, 100 media servers sharing 50 tape drives will result in 500 emm device entries. That is without stu's and entries for the media servers itself.
    Recommendation is to not exceed 1500 device entries in emm.

    There was a best practise and performance tuning session at Vision this morning, presented by Symantec lead architects. As soon as the pdf version of the presentation is posted on Connect, I will post a link.

    Please check comms between master and media servers with these commands on the master: nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose nbemmcmd -getemmserver vmdareq vmoprcmd

    I was more interested in the output of these commands that knowing that commands executed successfully.

    You will have to restart NetBackup on Master server when no backups are running. (bp.kill_all then bp.start_all).

    I'm confused by the output of the vmoprcmd; how many media servers do you have???  It looks like you may have installed the NetBackup Server software on every client, instead of installing the client software, and you have mounted the tape drives to every client...? 

    If this is true, then that could very well explain why you are getting erros regarding the tape drive scan host.

    Also, 32 of your 94 tape drives are in a "Clean" status.  Do you have any cleaning tapes in your tape library?

    Hi Ron,

     

    We have 200+ media servers in our environment and 600+ Clients.

    Yes we always keep 2-3 cleaning medias in each library.

    we have 3 libraries(2 IBM TS3500 library+1 SL550 Library)

    Seems your environment has become too big to be managed by a single master server. Best if you get a Symantec Consulting partner to come and health check your environment. The output that I have requested is only of value when the errors are seen.
