Images missing from the catalog.

Hello,

We were trying to restore an oracle database and we found out that some fragments of the backup were missing along with the images. How can I get track of how this images were deleted and when, we already made an import on the tape to recover this images.

Thanks in advance.

  • Can you clarify what you mean by fragments and images - to a NetBackup admin, an image (IMAGE) describes one backup piece, while a fragment (FRAG) is part of an image. So one IMAGE consists of one or more FRAGs. If you mean something different, that relates to an Oracle backup - can you explain what you mean and what fragments have been deleted? Otherwise, continue...

An image can have multiple copies - each FRAG for that copy will have the same expiry date (different copies may have a different expiry). If this is the case that a FRAG has been deleted from a copy of an IMAGE this is bad (and is unlikely to have been caused by NetBackup itself).

Also what was/is the storage medium that these fragments "disappeared" from - was it disk or tape? If disk what type of disk. A scenario that could explain what happened is if the storage is on basic or advnced disk, then it would be quite easy to delete one of the fragments.

  • There are only two reasons for expired missing images.  They expired because your config of schedules and or SLPs were wrong at the time of backup (and yes they may well be corect now - but maybe at the time of backup maybe they weren't), or maybe someone has been manually expiring things?

I think the bpdbm log will log when images get expired - and maybe someone else can confirm this.
