Migrating Master/Media server

We are thinking of migrating from Windows Server 2008 R2 standard to Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V for master server. Two media servers will run under Windows Server 2012 in physical servers. On these media servers tape libraries and disk storage will be connected. Is it recommended that our master server will be virtualized and the media servers will be in physical servers? What version of OS you recommend, is it Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2? Master and Media Server recommended memory?

Currently, our master and media server is in one physical server with 2GB of RAM. Please provide comments and suggestions.

Thank you.

  • INT_RND has expressed personal preferences.

We have customers running NBU master on W2012.
I have not seen or heard of issues using this OS.

You need to make up your own mind.

We can only comment on what is supported or not.

I agree with 'over provisioning' of resources and the importance of the master server.

As per 'General guidelines for support' in TECH127089:

    ■ NetBackup may experience lesser performance within the hypervisor. It may
be necessary to increase system resources to address a performance issue.

I would personally recommend physical master over virtual.
    Again - personal preference.
