MSDP pool size

Hi,

Customer has 50TB disk (HP) but when configuring the disk pool, only 30TB can be utilized.

How can they utilized the whole 50TB if only one disk pool can be configured?

OS is Windows 2012 Standard.

Thanks.

  • As per one of your previous posts - only one disk/lun can be used for MSDP.

Best to remove MSDP pool and start from scratch.
LUN will need to be recreated on the array so that a single 50TB lun can be presented to the OS.

OS or raid-level disk config is not documented in any NBU docs.

  • 1) What form is the HP disk in?  Is it HP StoreOnce de-dupe, or HP P2000 DAS (FC,SAS,SCSI), or HP 3PAR SAN/FC LUNs perhaps?  So, is the HP storage presented via OST, or LUNs/volumes?  So, is the MSDP space accessed via an HP OST plugin, or via NetBackup MSDP itself?

    2) Which management tool does the customer use to 'manage/carve/provision/allocate/present' the space?

    3) What is the customer's 'front-end' capacity, i.e. how big is one full data-set to be backed-up?  (hint: use the nbdeployutil tool to size the front-end capacity).

    4) Please describe the retention policies?  i.e. the frequency and type and retention.

Once we know this, we might be able to comment more.

  • Some more info please

How do you conclude customer customer only has 30TB available ?

Has RAID overhead been deducted from the 50TB, using RAID6 (double parity) will cost on available space.

  • Before MSDP is configured - what is the size of the mounted NTFS filesystem in Windows Explorer?

  • According to the client, they have a 32TB and 20TB mounted. Is it possible to create a single disk pool from 2 drives?

Are there any documents regarding disk pool size of MSDP?

    Thank you so much!

  • Just to clarify, a 50tb media server is fine with Windows 2012 standard?

Is there a limit on the size of media server?

Thank you so much for answering my inquiries Marianne!

  • There is no restriction from NBU point of view. Max size that can be configured is 64TB.

PLEASE ensure that media server has sufficient cpu and memory.

We have seen in real life that about 1.5GB memory is needed for each TB of dedupe storage.
That is over and above normal media server and OS memory requirements.
