NBU, RedHat, DDoS, DDBoost upgrades

Hello,

Due to aging software version, we're upgrading our entire NetBackup environment.  We have a local Masteer with two Media servers and a remote DR Master/Media server. We use AIR to transfer backup infor from the local Master to the Dr Master.

However, since these upgrades cannot be completed all at once, the upgrades will take place in three steps, each on a separate weekend:  a), NetBackup, b). Data Domain DDoS and  DDBoost and c). Master Media server OS RedHat.

Q: Based on the to/from versions listed below, is there a recommended order of upgrades to maintain compatibilty

Here's the proposed upgrades:

  • NetBackup software 7.6.0.3  to  7.7.x
  • RHEL Server OS 5.11  to  6.x.x
  • EMC Data Domain OS 5.6.0.5-501748  to  5.7.x
  • OST DD Boost 3.0.4.0-525810   to  compatible version

Thanks in advance...

Let me know if this problem is more appropriate for a support case.

  • Please review the SORT to check the compatability as suggest earlier reply - https://sort.veritas.com/checklist/install/nbu_sample_unix

After making sure all your compatability matrix matches with what you have and what you want to uprade to,

    I would follow this order

    1. Upgade DD and then DDBoost on media/master servers

    2. Upgrade NetBackup to the 7.7.3 on all the servers

    3. Then I would think of upgrading to Latest RHEL OS and moving NetBackup to new OS is going to tricky, this is going to be a mini project and most probably you may have to consult with support or vendor to make sure it goes smoothly. This will not be straight forward.

Experts, please add or correct if I am missing something here.

  • Have you checked compatibility guides?

Have you checked and verified that OS upgrade will leave installed s/w intact and not perform a format before OS install?
  • Hello,

Not sure which compatibilty guides to review for the NBU and Data Domain DDoS and DDboost compatibilty.

Per RedHat, the recommended method to upgrade from RedHat 5 to 6 is to wipe the disk and install from scratch, which will result in a NBU DR type recovery.   The RedHat 6 install from scratch which will probably be the upgrade plan, however the admins are testing a 5 to 6 "in-place" upgrade to determine the difference.

If you aren't sure where to find the compatibility matrix for your EMC DD products, the easiest way to go would have been opening a case with DellEMC. Your products are under support period, right?

Saving you a bit of time though:

http://compatibilityguide.emc.com:8080/ choose your software/hardware combination to generate a live matrix. Not only this matrix is valuable, you should create your own matrix of the upgrad "path" as your upgrade includes almost everything. Go step-by-step, and verify at each step; not all at once.
