    Once a tape is added to NBU, it never gets deleted automatically. You need to delete it when the tape is permanently removed from the environment. Robot Inventory will merely update the location of the tapes. Tapes no longer in the robot will have location of NONE. Lots of users take tapes offsite after backup to a Vault for safekeeping. No way you want Inventory to delete knowledge of those tapes!

Further to Nicolais correct answer ...

The volume group is a logical representation of location.  It looks something like this :

000_00000_TLD

This would represent robot TLD(0) ...

and this ...

000_00001_TLD would represent robot TLD(1)

The first three digits are a bit harder, but not much ...  they represent the 'instance' of different density (hcart, hcart2 etc )

So if I first configre with only hcart tapes/ drives on robot 0 I will have 

000_00000_TLD (hcart)

If I then add an hcart2 drive, and tapes I will have 

001_00000_TLD - (some other density other than what was 000_00000_TLD)

So it shows the number of different densities, but not what they are ...

So on my system the two vol pools represent hcart and hcart2, but on Nicolais system, he may have 4mm and DLT, but this would lead to the same two volume groups.

Helpfully, the vol pool --- means none robotic and you can have others that you name yourself if you use Vault.

Sometimes things can get a bit mixed up with vol groups (usually only if you fiddle and force things) eg. change the density of a tape with the vmchange command.  Simply making the tapes 'NONE' robotic and a reinventory usually sorts things out.
