hello everyone, i've installed Netbackup 6.5.0 on AIX 5.3. when i discovered my IBM TS3100 Tape library through netbackup wizard,it did't find the Robot. when i tried to run the robtest command it says robot not configured.... what should i do to configure the robot and to properly bring it into functionality. waiting for your kind response..

Have you tried to verify that config is correct by testing tape mount and dismount using robtest? See http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH83129 examples: s d returns the status of all drives s s returns the status of all slots m s1 d1 moves the contents of slot 1 into drive 1. unload d1 rewinds the tape in the drive and releases the read/write head m d1 s1 moves the tape from drive 1 into slot 1

Not sure if in newer ibm libraries this is been change but it old ones the robot is controled by drive 1 path by.default, check on the.media.server who sees drive 1 and check if it also haves a robot under the devices paths.

Omar is correct, the IBM 3500 series uses a drive to 'get to the robot'. It is called the 'Control Path' and is set in the library console/ software. You need configure only one drive as the control path, if this drive was for example c1t1d1 then I think the robot would be c1t1d2 ( I think ???) Providing the server can see the drive that you select as the 'control path' - it should then see the robot. It might need a reboot of the server for this to appear. Martin

Fri st you need to make sure you have the Atape.driver file set installed lslpp -L | grep Atape If not call IBM and ask to get it ( I could never find it and had to call) in the lib one of the tape drives has to be configured as the controlling tape drive and it has to be zoned to your master server ( I am of course assuming the drives are fiber and you are zoning them to your master and media server) then you have to create an ovpass and sm0 for the aix server to see the robot. lsdev will show you these if you do not have and ovpass and sm0 then NB will not see the robot. it should get created when you do cfgmgr (sorry I don't have instructions on how to create it fresh for the first time if the cfgmgr does not work)

One more thing - if you patch your master and media servers to above 6.5.2 ( I recommend 6.5.6 ), you don't need ovpass, BUT you need to confirm that the devices are seen at OS level.

Marianne i'll definatly consider patching my NB to latest version. but first i have to make sure that Robot is detected. ok if i install Atape.driver i guess my robot will be discovered automatically...

As per my post, ensure that before you even think about NetBackup, the operating system can see the robot, else NBU will never work.

Then, and only then, can you start to configure NetBackup.

I am sure you will do these things in order ... :0)

First of all, confirm that the OS can see the robot.

IF you install Atape AND you patch THEN your robot will be automatically discovered. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH72966

Marianne is it ok to upgrade my NETBACKUP 6.5.0 to 6.5.6 Directly....or anything else should i need to do before that...????
