vmware - flashbackup (2 - mapped fullVM) v6.5.1 fails (ERR - Unable to read metadata for index)

We are trying to evaluate netbackup v6.5.1 for use with vmware/vcb.  We can get netbackup to interface with vmware/vcb, snapshots are taken, full vm image is dumped on the proxy server. But then when netbackup i assume if doing the mapping of the vm it fails with the errors below. We tried this on two different small vm's.
Seems like netbackup starts to map the backup and then just fails, finished but never really backup anything.
We are also seeing the second error

  • Hi Pravs -

We're already at version 6.5.3, and we're doing type 3 backups.  The problem was with all indexes and was, as you say, fixed by the registry change in this technote:

    http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/311422.htm

So our main issue is already resolved.

We do still occasionally see VM backups reporting partial success because they have failed on a few indexes - this is intermittent so not a huge problem.

    Thanks,

    Nicky
  • Hi Nicky,

I have posted couple of articles and blogs related to Flashbackup performnce and you may consider to read them. good that your major issue is solved.

If you are seeing error just for few random indexes, then chances are high that your drive is highly fragmented and you have not run chkdsk from a long on VM.

though articles talk about FlashBackup only but it's fairly applicable to VCB type 0 and Type 3 backups where same mechanism is used for Mapping. though Type 2 works slightly different.

you migt be intersted in this article as well.

I am thinking to write couple of more articles related to FBU mapping and such failures of indexes. My Bad. I hope, I will get time soon to complete them.
