Backup Exec 8.6 in co-operation with Backup Exec 10.d (10.1)

Our customer is using on 2 servers the good old version 8.6 of Backup exec with a DAT tape streamer and Remote agent Windows NT/2000. Each machine runs its own backup solution.

Now whe are going to install a new backup solution on 1 Win2.3K server with backup exec 10d (10.1) and LTO drives and Remote agent for Windows or Netware servers. Which is going to backup the two old servers.

Due to restore issues we can not remove the 8.6 software on the 2 old backup servers but we need to install the remote agent for Windows on these machines to make a reliable backup.

The question is:

Can a local installed backup exec 8.6 version work with a remote backup solution while the remote agent voor backup exec 10d has been added to the server. Or are the major issues to be expected when we implement this. We do not tried this because we do not want so cause a server hang or something worse.

We hope that there are some people with enough experience on this matter

  • Due to restore issues

What restore issues, Attach the old drives to the new server, move/copy the v8.6 catalogs to the new BackupServer and install v10. It should migrate the catalogs to the v10 format

I have no idea if this will work, but it is the only thing that MIGHT.

shut down all v8.6 services, install the v10 remote agent. Create a couple of CMD files Shut down v8.6/start v10 and shutdown v10/start v8.6

had to do something similar during the v6.11/v7.0 migration.
