Help setting up NDMP from filer to 11d server - no tape device on filer

I'm having problems setting up the following scenario:

1.BackupExec 11d master server with the NDMP option installed
2.NetApp FAS270 Filer with NDMP turned on (no directly attached tape device)
3.I'm trying to run a backup from the filer to the 11d server using NDMP (rather than mapping drives on the 11d server).

I've tried the following:
a.  added the NetApp to BE as an NDMP server and tried to run a backup
b.  added the NetApp to BE as a user-defined selection and tried to run a backup with the specific volumes used as backup selections and the BE server as the destination

In both cases I get the error "Jobs with NDMP backup selections must be targeted to an NDMP device".  Now i've been told that this can be done and was possible in previous verions of BE and is possible in Netbackup.  I'm looking for advice on whether i'm trying to do something that's not possible or if i'm simply doing something wrong.
