Space issues

We are running a full backup of our server which normally is 55Gb or so, over last couple of days this amount has gone up to 59Gb and over hence it is asking for another tape to be inserted. No changes have been made on the server and there is no reason for the server space to go up by 4-5Gb is this space of time. Checking the file sizes and Exchange mailbox sizes they do not seem to be any larger is size than a week ago. In the job log it is saying that the mailboxes backed up amounted to 32Gb but when looking in Exchange system manager it only adds up to 22Gb if that. Checked the settings of the schelduled job and all settings appear to be ok and no duplicate data is being backed up. Any ideas?

  • Variances in compression of data are not uncommon.

As exchange is used, there can be more transaction logs backed up one day than another.  As these fluctuate, your backup will grow/shrink depending on Exchange activity.

Keep an eye on it, but I would suspect it is compression and log file/database changes.
