I have seen EV archive massive mailboxes. The initial scan of the mailboxes may take a huge amount of time (days) so dont let the EV box go into backup mode or fall over. But it should eventualy start to clear it down.
Otherwise you should probably make a new journal mailbox for fresh data to go to, then methodically copy legacy data across.
