Enabling Native Tape Drive Compression on LTO5 and LTO6 Drives
Does anyone have a walk through on enabling tape drive compression(NOT software compression)? I've been doing some research and it appears commands such as: sdparm - <device>, and sginfo -a displays the following information: Data compression (SSC) mode page: DCE 1 [cha: y, def: 1, sav: 1] DCC 1 [cha: n, def: 1, sav: 1] DDE 1 [cha: n, def: 1, sav: 1] RED 0 [cha: n, def: 0, sav: 0] COMPR_A 255 [cha: n, def:255, sav:255] DCOMPR_A 255 [cha: n, def:255, sav:255] I have 6 Netbackup 5200 and 5220s connected to an IBM3584 with 12 LTO4, 5, and 6 drives via FC. The library and drives are functioning however, I'm not getting no where near the data compression on the LTO6 tapes that I thought I would. I'm only seeing about 3.1TB on a LTO6 tape. Can someone explain the output above and what my settings should be. Thanks.Solved6.8KViews2likes7CommentsNFS mount point on NetBackup 5230 Appliance
Hi Team, Please I need your expert advise on this solution: Customer has proposed implementing backup solution via NFS; this solution is based on having the centralized server IPs & file path where to send the backups to. We currently have Symantec NetBackup 5230 Appliance installed in this customer datacenter. Question: Will NetBackup 5230 Appliance support mount points from network file systems (NFS). This will enable customer backup their network file system data to the central storage location, which is on the NBU appliance. Thanks in advance, FelixSolved6.5KViews1like11CommentsNetbackup 5200 Duplication Jobs Fail with Error 191, then keep re-spawning and failing
Hi, We are having problems with duplication jobs on our Netbackup 5200 appliance. We use storage lifecycle policies to backup to the 5200 as the primary copy, and then duplicate off to tape. This has worked fine for months, but recently the duplication jobs have started failing with error 191. They start OK and backup a few GB of data, but then fail before the end (the primary copy backup jobs to the appliance complete OK). Looking more closely at the job log reveals the following: Critical bpdm(pid=14456) sts_read_image failed: error 2060017 system call failed Critical bpdm(pid=14456) image read failed: error 2060017: system call failed Error bpdm(pid=14456) cannot read image from disk, Invalid argument I originally thought this wassome kind of corruption on the appliance, but the strange this is that we can still backup to the appliance OK, and even restore from some of the images that are failing to duplicate. I've adjusted the PoolUsageMaximum andPagedPoolSize parameters as suggested on some sites without success. Another problem is that when the duplication jobs fail they re-spawn again, so we have numerous duplication jobs running that are hogging our tape driveswhich ishaving a knock-on effect on normal backups to tape. We have temporarily suspended duplication to help with this, but it isn't a long term fix. Our environment comprises: NBU Master Server 7.1.0.4 (Win2003 R2), NBU Media Sever 7.1.0.4 (Win2003 R2), NBU 5200 Appliance (2.0.2) I've got a ticket open with Symantec about this and they are currently investigating, but just wondered if anyone else in the community had ever seen this before. Any help would be much appreciated. ThanksSolved5KViews0likes3Commentsinterrupt when backup large SQL databases
Hi, Usually MSSQL backups are interrupted at the middle of backup, it success if try again second or third times. We tried scenerios below,(First tried with version 7.5.0.5, then 7.6.0.1 and result is same) What is the root cause of the problem do you think? A quick question about using NetBackup with compressed SQL Server backups. Our backups infrastructure consists of NetBackup v7.6 and NetBackup 5230 appliances. Our SQL server estate is a mixture of SQL Server versions 2005-2012 on Windows 2003-2012. We've noticed that the deduplication ratio (as reported by backup jobs in Netbackup Activity Monitor) for compressed SQL backups is 0% (we experimented with the NetBackup SQL Agent and alsostandard flat file backups). Now we weren't expecting to get much deduplication out of a compressed SQL Server backup - but it was a suprise to get nothing at all. Previous tests performed on other deduplication platforms(Exagrid and Windows native 2012 deduplication) showed that a noticeable (albeit muchlower rate compared with uncompressed backups)deduplication level of about4:1 was possible withcompressed SQL Server backups. So my question is - is this a configuration issue on our NetBackup infrastructure - or is there a technical\designreason why thededuplication of compressed SQL Server backups is not available inNetBackup? Hi We are in a process to make changes to our current backup environment. Our main focus is to do some changes in our 2 main sites. Both sites have their respective domains with multiple mediaservers (no appliance or DD). What we are trying to achieve is as follows: Try to merge both domains, so both are member of the same domain acting as a cluster with 1 node at each site. Purchase storage or appliance to achieve the following: With 1 storage\appliance at each site, have optimized duplication enabled so we have 2 copies of the backup, one at each site(storage\appliance) at all time. This to gradually go away fromweekly tape vault and go overto a disk based solution. I have done som research already, and this forum thread is to verify the information in handand to add even more information is possible. Could someone give me answers to the following questions: First and foremost, to achieve the above mentioned goals, Do you guys suggest DataDomain or Netbackup Appliance? And then why? Is optimized duplication only a feature available in storages like Netbackup appliances\DD or is it something you can achieve with two MSDP pools at each site? Netbackup recommends that we segment the data on a dedupe pool for best performance, how are we suppose to achieve that when we only can create 1 pool out of 1 Netbackup appliance? In DD you can create mutiple pools, and have a Global deduplication enabled. How can we achieve that with Netbackup appliance?Solved4.5KViews0likes17Commentszoning Architecture
Hi All , Could any body provide me with the zoning Architecture between the datasores LUN's and the VMware Backup host HBA? Any official article or documentwill be good. - Linux Vmware backup host ( appliance) -for windows it is clear but for linux machine not!! what is main concept of this Architecture. I know that zoning is type of direct SAN connection (path)between the LUN's and the backup host wher the data store should be visible to the VMware backup host .From the appliance I can see the wwn of the datastores but the path is not shown. Is it mandatorythe path shouldbe shown too beside seeing the device?Solved4.3KViews1like35CommentsEncryption option on Appliance 5230
Hi, I am running with a POC with Appliance 5230 installed as Master/Media with MSDP. I enable Encryption on appliance:Main_Menu> Settings> Deduplication> Tune Encryption Enable. Now, how to I ensure that images on pool are encrypted, and how do I test that itis secured with unautorized restore to distinct server/location. I do see some file created under /disk/databases/catalog/number/client_host_name/policy_name/client-host-name_backup-timestamp_C1_F1.img should I also have a keys stored somewhere?Solved4.3KViews1like11Comments
