A guide to booting HP Elitepad to recovery environment using USB flash drive
Hi, Back in October 2013, a support case that I opened with Symantec in relation to failure of the Elitepad 900 G1 to boot into the Symantec recovery environment from a USB or DVD drive etc, was ultimately closed with no resolution due to a compatibility issue or similar. I recently decided to pick this up again and am pleased to report a successful outcome but not without issues. Here's what I did: > Note: I have SP2 installed on my SSR client (Ver. 11.0.2.49853)but this is immaterial to process described below. > Grabbed a copy of the latest 32bit recovery ISO (SSR11.0.2.49853_AllWin_English_SrdOnly.iso)from here:https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=88724 > Obtained and formatted thumb drive as FAT32 (I did not have to bother with the diskpart procedure that is referenced as required from several sources) > Used WinZip to extract the contents of the ISO to the USB flash drive. Note: DO NOT use the Customer Recovery Disk wizard in the SSR 2013 client. > That's it, plugged it in to one of 2 x USB sockets available on the Elitepad productivity jacket. (Note: if you don't have a jacket you might be in trouble having access to only 1 x USB port. > A USB keyboard needs to be connected to the 2nd USB port as there is no touch panel functionality in the recovery environment. Note that If you wish to use a USB Ext Drive to store the recovery points, the USB Boot Flash drive can be safely removed once the environment is entered, allowing you to connect your USB Ext Drive. > In Elitepad Advanced Startup options, selected USB EFI Boot Device option. > Elitepad booted into recovery environment with navigation by keyboard thereafter (Some useful keyboard shortcuts are:- TAB to cycle the focus between objects; enter to select; [space] to check/uncheck a checkbox; right arrow key to expand a file folder to show subfolder) > Ripped a Windows 8.1 image from one Elitepad and then restored using this image to a factory state Windows 8.0 device with no issues whatsoever, just had to re-activate Windows after the restore. So anyway, the critical step in the process described above is to use WinZip or a similar archiving utility to get the ISO contents onto the flash drive because for some bizarre reason, if you use the Symantec Custom Recovery Disk wizard to burn the ISO, this causes all of the files on the flash drive to become hidden (even with "Show Hidden Files / Folders" checked in file explorer?) with the exception of autorun.inf. The problem appears to be that the Elitepad 900 GI apparently can't see these files because it does not recognise a flash drive prepared in this manner, as a valid EFI USB boot device. It seems unlikely that the Elitepad 900 is the only tablet that might be affected by this issue. Hopefully this guide might save somebody some time at some stage. I created a backup of my Dell Optiplex 390 and there are 3 total files. A Dell File, A Recovery File, and the C Drive. When I boot into the SSR 2011 I am clicking Backup Recovery then clicking next and I am loading the files in this order. (I am deleting the c drive partition before laying down the images) 1.Dell File 2.C Drive 3.System Recovery (making it bootable option checked) Am I doing this wrong? Does anyone know the correct order to lay down the images, and what options I need to have checked when doing a recovery on this machine? So far I have gotten a missing boot file error then telling me to ctrl+alt+delete+, The error I have gotten the most is a black screen with a blinking cursor...... I am stumped on what options may need to be checked within the 3 different files and which order to lay them down. Any and all support is much appreciated, if you need more details please let me know what you need. Thanks, Joshua3.1KViews2likes21CommentsFormer Ghost 15 user - Getting trapped in the SSR 2013 Trial
A few days ago I had an issue with doing a system restore using Ghost 15. I went to that forum for help and learned that Symantec was going to discontinue Ghost and recommended users "check out" SSR 2013 with its free trial. I downloaded the free trial and eventually learned it would not install unless I first remove Ghost. That wasn't from anything that I saw when the SSR installation failed; that happened without any additional information. However, I did eventually find my way to this forum and a helpful Guru pointed out the issue and also that I could always re-install Ghost if I wasn't happy with SSR. I uninstalled Ghost, installed SSR, and started backing stuff up. Now, if one of the things you want to do is a full system restore (my primary interest)then you need a recovery disk. SSR will make a recovery disk for you and all you need to do is provide an activation key which you don't get with the trial version. No problem, as all I need to do is install Ghost. But I can't install Ghost until I uninstall SSR. And SSR WILL NOT UNINSTALL. Whenever I try to uninstall it there's an Error 2738 and something about a VBasic error. So now I have a trial verision of a program that I can't use and a paid for program I can no longer load. I guess it can all be fixed if I pay Symantec for an activation key for a program that I'm not sure I want in the hopes it will maybe allow me to upgrade to a latter version that can uninstall so I can install the program I uninstalled so I could evaluate the Free Trial. To put it another way, I may have to pay Symantec to I can remove their free software and load back the software I paid them for as well. And, even it it turns out there's a simple, and hopefully less expensive, way out of this I've still wasted a lot of time on what should be a free trial of a comercial product which appears to be more of an alpha test. (If I sound upset, it's because I really am)2.4KViews3likes12CommentsSymantec System Recovery 2013

Hi Everyone, We successfully deploy SSR 2013 on Windows Server 2003 R2 but problem arised when we try to deploy it on an Active Directory Server. After successful installation, the server requires a reboot. But when we reboot it, the server failed to boot on Windows. What we do is to uninstall the SSR 2013 so that it can boot properly. We try other vesion of SSR like 2011 but same error occurs. The credential we used on installing SSR has an administrator rights. I would like to know if SSR 2013 and 2011 has compatibility problem on Active Directory and what we can do to fix it? Thanks in advance..:)2.1KViews0likes16Commentsrestore anywhere didn't prompt for the raid adapter driver, how to add it from the recovery console ?
