I have a bit more information that might be of use. As I've continued to research this problem, I've uncovered information pointing me to a file with which I've had little contact in the past - the nsswitch.conf file. Apparently, this file is used to determine which methods are supposed to be used first in name and IP resolution. Methods include DNS, NIS, NIS+, and the local host file. As I've said, my server doesn't have DNS, NIS, or NIS+ set up, which leaves me with the hosts file.

This brings me to my point. Somehow, I have NO NSSWITCH.CONF FILE. I don't know how this happened - I only just installed the OS. Now I need to research some more info on nsswitch.conf and figure out what I need to do. If anyone has any info to help expedite my search, please let me know.
